Answering ICONYC's distinct call, Belgian sound alchemists RE-TYPE step up to the plate with their superb three-track EP, Echoes. Designers of a prolific discography, Lucas and Pieter's arresting creations have garnered support from major players, including the likes of Tale Of Us and Camelphat, as they carve a unique trajectory, empowered by a sound that exists in its own timeline, lying far beyond the imagination of most modern creators.
 
Reflecting what once was, the EP's titular "Echoes" finds RE-TYPE knee-deep in a chugging groove where thumping kicks and restless hi-hats drive us down a cavernous rabbit hole of illusions. Here, we are lured by washed-out vocals that linger, echoing across mirrored halls before coming into focus as they light up the piece, unveiling a laser-cut lead line for a dazzling experience. With the track now in full throttle, our Belgian maestros then terraform a second break, taking the dial up to 11 for maximum impact before "Echoes" dissolves into the past for a full circle.                                 

As we hit play on our answering machines, RE-TYPE present us with "Dalliance", where a coded message and a dense frame cut through the static with consummate ease. Shrouded in a cosmic haze, the production duo unleashes a tantalizing lead that traverses across a stabbed bassline and meandering synth swells that dance in the background, carelessly, unaffected by the track's own entropy. Harnessing tension with every passing beat, RE-TYPE devise a monumental breakdown, allowing for a decompressing release that takes "Dalliance" higher into the firmament for a rousing finale.

Echoes's third gem comes in the shape of "Voicenote". Here, Lucas and Pieter craft a restless groove where lush synths rise into the sun at their own pace, generating a gorgeous sense of juxtaposition before a gracious vocal sample invites us inside for an unforgettable dance. As the beats pass us by, the warm synthetic lines come through in waves, colliding against thunderous drum arrangements, generating a fantastic maelstrom of love forged by the memories of better days to come.

There’s a certain poise in melodic progressive house when it’s done right, an emotional pull beneath the surface, a sense of patience and purpose. ‘Circles’, the new collaborative single from Belgian scene mainstay Maxim Lany and rising artist Viktor, delivers on that promise with quietly evocative force.

Maxim Lany, a familiar name for followers of Europe’s deeper electronic undercurrents, brings years of studio refinement to the collaboration. With a back catalogue on labels like Bedrock, Kittball and Armada Electronic Elements, and support from the likes of Solomun, Kölsch and Tale Of Us, his music has long straddled that fine line between club functionality and introspective storytelling. Here, he meets Viktor, an emerging producer whose work reveals a keen ear for atmosphere and emotion, and together they find common ground in something that feels simultaneously expansive and inward facing.

‘Circles’ builds around a lush, slow-burning arrangement: ascending pads stretch over a bed of rolling percussion, while a central melodic motif loops hypnotically, folding back on itself like a thought that refuses to settle. There's a restraint at play, no dramatic drops or overt crescendos, just a steady emotional swell that’s more felt than heard.

It’s the kind of track designed not for the peak-time but for the liminal moments of a set, those in-between passages where the dancefloor softens, the lights dim slightly, and the mood turns contemplative. In that space, ‘Circles’ resonates deeply.
