I was asked to remix this Gospel disco classic and it ended up being the lead track on the promo twelve for the Tirk 02 compilation. Massive thanks to Gilles Peterson and Greg Wilson for their support with this track. It was released in Feb 2009.

Populous, aka Andrea Mangia, is a DJ and producer hailing from Lecce, in Southern Italy, known for his global approach to music-making. “Flores No Mar,” the first single from the upcoming ‘W’ album, features vocals from Brazilian singer (now based in Milan) Emmanuelle, and is an homage to the goddess Lemanja, of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé. Lemanja is the goddess protecting seafarers and fishermen, as well as femininity and womanhood. This plays into the album’s theme as a tribute to a free and diverse feminine musical imagery.

With a background in musicology, Populous has always been interested in disparate genres and styles of music, which is reflected in the output from the Populous project and its focus on Latin American sounds as refracted through a European lens. In 2003, Mangia made his first jaunt into the music world with the album ‘Quipo’ (via Morr Music), followed by ‘Queue For Love’ in 2005. Influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy’s Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) he released ‘Drawn in Basic’ in 2008, which was well received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global dance music map. The 2010s have seen Mangia refine the Populous sound with albums like ‘Night Safari’ (Bad Panda Records) and ‘Azulejos’ (Wonderwheel Recordings), while also expanding his role as a sound designer for fashion houses such as Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Elie Saab, among others.

Smeerch became a dj by nurturing his passion in music. He born in Puglia but is living in Rome since 1997. As a boy he started to act as MC in some school party, then he moved to Rome for attending the University and there his love for deejaying blossomed. He started setting up parties and selecting records for his friends, then in 2001 Smeerch’s curiosity discovered DAW softwares and how easy is sampling songs, so the young dj started to stir sounds, mix synths and creating dance tracks. In 2017 he releleased “Samples’ Salad”, a self financed EP pressed on only 108 vinyl. In 2019 Plastik People Digital (Marc Cotterell's label) released his first official digital release: Afronenia; this track has been also remixed by Terrence Parker, the legendary dj from Detroit. In 2021 the label Major Underground - run by Maurizio Clemente - released his third track titled "Hiccups"; this single - singed by Shaina Jones - contained even a remix by great USA dj Mr. V. In 2022 Smeerch founded his own label "Yellow Watermellow" and released on it 2 single: "Dancing like Cher" and "Seashells", the latter containing a remix by the legend Eric Kupper.
