"The band Smilla from the southern Russian city of Rostov-na-Donu. Textual support is close to zero and clear-cut photographs of the band are outnumbered by a series of bleached, barely discernible images of hands, faces, and other body parts. Vagueness and absence are thus cultivated, both physically and lyrically. The band's brief songs also work towards this goal of understatement and thematic homelessness; they're woven from the shortest possible phrasing, moving in and out of Italian, German, and other languages. Concrete tongues - and places - are referenced, but never chosen for long.

The only available information to accompany a recent EP and single is a list of the four band members: Smilla (vocals and keyboards), Roman Belenkiy (guitar), Alexandr Tüterev (bass), and Vladimir Kondratiev (drums and effects). With that our insight comes to a temporary end, though it's interesting to see that some Russian admirers like to tag Smilla as a "hipster" outfit. Beside the possible overlap here with Oleg Chubykin's self-definition as a manque hippy, the term fixed to Smilla is usually applied to a melange of various underground or "minor" styles - none of which are taken very seriously".
