Alhaji Waziri Oshomah begins his sermon before a dancing crowd. We’re in a small part of southern Nigeria called Afemailand, known for being a harmonious region where Muslims, Christians, and everyone, no matter their religion, live—and dance—together. 

His song spreads messages of peace, acceptance, and togetherness. “Omhona - Omhona,” he sings over his propulsive keyboard. “We need everybody for a better society. Because a tree cannot make a forest alone. The forest is comprised of different trees and many other living things.”

A collection of covers of master Brazilian musician and writer Jorge Ben. With such classics under his belt as Mas Que Nada, covered by the likes of Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau, and the song Taj Mahal which was the source of Rod Stewart’s Do You Think I’m Sexy?, Ben is a huge force in Brazilian popular music.

Often described as the James Brown of Brazilian music due to his prolific output, he is the most sampled Brazilian artist ever with people from the Black Eyed Peas to DJ Marky lifting elements off his tracks. His song catalogue has also been covered by some of the finest bands in Brazil.

This selection represents a more dance-floor orientated outing including mega rarities for the collecting fiends like Cosa Nostra by Os Mutreteiros Grilados and tracks that even Ben himself never got around to singing like Rei Do Maracatu's Cyro Aguiar.

This Reshape of Claudia - Deixa Eu Dizer, original track sampled by Marcelo D2 in 2008 for "Desabafo", is the second in a series of bootleg remixes that iZem recently started, including one remix of Solange played by Gilles Peterson, Lefto and many more. His forthcoming EP has been announced for the end of spring and will be released on the Lisbon-based label run by former members of Buraka Som Systema: Enchufada

iZem (the acronym of “in ze early morning”) is the alter ego of the French DJ and producer Jérémie Moussaid Kerouanton. He has been relentlessly looking for new horizons, in a constant search for links between cultures through music. He has been producing and mixing music under the name iZem for almost 10 years, and his efforts to travel off the beaten track have long been supported by some of the greatest tastemakers, including Gilles Peterson, XLR8R and KCRW. After working in radio in Paris at the beginning of the 2000s, and in a hurry to experience more in the world, he left France in 2005 to work as a guitarist in musical projects in Spain and then in Recife, Brazil. During his exciting South American experience, and while spending one year in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he co-founded the online radio Groovalizacion. He continued to document his musical adventures through podcasts recorded in various places of residence. After spending several years working as a DJ in Dublin, he moved to Lisbon in 2013, a cosmopolitan and sun-filled port city, with the idea of putting the finishing touches on his first album Hafa. He also began to put together a group to perform his music live. This album’s impact has grown and grown throughout the world, and its supporters include famous musicians, such as the British Bonobo, Mount Kimbie, Quantic, the Luso-Angolan Batida and the Italian Clap Clap...

Something different from Causa Sui.

While Causa Sui have always had one foot in heavy psychedelic rock, they've had the other one deep in a wide variety of esoteric styles. On this new double LP set, that other dimension of the band is being explored full-scale.

”Szabodelico” paints with a colourful palette, both compositionally and sonically - digging deep into an assortment of cultures, eras and sounds with a true crate-digger mindset. Throughout their 15 year life-span Causa Sui has always been about seeking out new directions, exploring the past and the present in a way that's unique at each step of their subtle progression - forging new paths into an existing map. ”Szabodelico” feels like discovering a small room under the stairs of your own house: familiar, yet new and exciting.

Their latest vision is an elegantly zoned-out version of itself: a turn inward. Anti-bombastic, yet rich with ecstatic harmonics and dynamics. The band stringed together a long series of sessions in 2019 and early 2020 in their studio in Odense, often prioritizing playful first takes and good vibes rather than clinical perfection.
Sparsely dubbed and mixed with a natural, full bodied flavour by Jonas Munk during the summer of 2020, each track has its own aesthetic. There's no simple equation to sum up the 13 individual parts of the album, but as a whole it creates an entity that's as complete as each of its parts. From the windblown opener ”Echoes of Light”, to the closing slow-motion epic ”Merging Waters” you'll find yourself asking where did the time go? The answer of course is: Szabodelico.
