Mathew Jonson presents Freedom Engine live at SGP 2023

For this instalment of the Rhythmic Culture podcast, we're excited to welcome the Canadian producer Mathew Jonson on the series. Whilst essentially a house and techno producer, Jonson has also been involved in many crossover projects including Cobblestone Jazz, Midnight Operator and the Modern Deep Left Quartet. For this instalment, Mathew presents a live recording of his project Freedom Engine at SGP 2023. 

"The recording is a mix of live improvisation via synthesizers and drum machines and tracks played from a DAW. Instruments from Roland (SH-101, TR-8S, SH-01A, T-8, and Demora), Elektron (Machinedrum), Midas (V240), and TC-Electronic (various effects) were used in the performance. 

The set also includes partial tracks and jams written and produced by Units and Measurements, Mathew Jonson, Plaid (MJ Remix of "Dragon Chase"), and Freedom Engine in collaboration with Magda."

Next up on the podcast series we have an hour of power from our Irish friend Fio Fa. He is a production machine who's club ready releases have been championed by Saoirse, Peach and many others, with his party and label Pear making movements across the UK and beyond. He's a man who knows how to bring the party and this mix is a fun trip through tech house, breaks and beyond with a couple of his own unreleased bits in there too. As one of our few residents, @steffenbennemann has played many sets in Olganitz - about half of them in numerous collaborations with friends. For our very last edition, he hooked up with @polooo who is also a firm Nachti favourite. Starting right before sunset they took us on a massive trip into the night that got the whole beach raving like there is no tomorrow.

It's been a rollercoaster year for us here at On Ro HQ. The year began with us losing our resident Alex T to meningitis and a global lockdown, and there were many points where we considered throwing the towel in for good. On reflection, we realised that this would be the last thing Alex would want us to do, and in his honour, On Rotation is set to come back firing on all cylinders. 

The first course of action we took was to appoint a new resident, Adam Pits. Adam has been a close friend of On Ro since we took on his production partner Lisene as a resident back in 2018 and had already been involved behind the scenes at our events for a while so this decision made perfect sense and happened so organically we didn't even plan it. This mix shows off his characteristic blend of trancey sounds with a bass-heavy, UK aesthetic and is the perfect way to welcome him into the fold. This is the first mix in our restart of the podcast series so if you sent one of us or Alex a mix previously, please get in touch so we can get the ball rolling again!

We already have a LOT of exciting projects planned for 2021 and beyond and can't wait to share the next evolution of On Rotation with you soon! Watch this space :)
