Never forgotten.Dave Twomey's still betwen us by his art

Perhaps best known for his association with beloved dance music blog Truants, @riccardovillella is also one of our favorite DJs—with a streak of mixes that always feel like instant classics—and a staple of the broader dance music scene in his own right. Villella's penchant for community began on early dance music forums and extends into today's social media networks and elevating others through mixes and in-depth interviews on @truants. His mix for us, inspired by timeless mix CDs like those of Fabric and a 'spiritual successor' to his mix for our friends at @sure_thing, is also a vivid memory of teenage bike rides along the beach in 2006.

"For the last 11 years I’d been living in London and for a long time, I had no desire really to leave. People say you can call somewhere 'home' after living there for a duration of seven years, so I was well past and on my way. The last three years though, I had really burnt out quite hard creatively, and was kind of just trudging along. It took me a while to realize that I’d maybe needed a break away from London and the constant living for the weekend parties. Work had gone remote, so the option of moving back home to Brighton on the seafront for a temporary reset and to save some money seemed like the logical next step.

I was quite excited about moving back, as one of my friends Bobby had moved back home from London a year prior to also work remote, my friend Sean was still down there and had been making some really cool art recently so we’d been reconnecting, and my friend Sam who moved to Australia 10 years ago was going to be back for a short trip in Brighton this year for a couple weeks. This felt kind of important to me as, as we’d all be in the same city for the first time in a very long time, and these were people that made up my favourite summer ever - the year 10 one in 2006.

... We spent most of that summer going on these really long bike rides from Shoreham-by-Sea, past the cement factory before reaching Brighton beach, and just cycle as far as we could until the sun went down. Me and Bobby would pack our little MP3 players (think I had a Creative Zen Touch then) the night before with as much ‘feels’ music as we’d like to call it, anything that would make our cycles feel like an extended Michael Mann movie, or "LA Action" we’d say. There was just something quite life-affirming as a 16 year old, headphones in, cycling back as the sun sets after exploring some beach cave and you’ve got either of Fila Brazillia - "Subtle Body", Groove Armada - "Paris", or DJ Shadow - "Blood On The Motorway" playing in the background. It was all very Stand By Me in the most musically liberating way possible. I’ve caught myself thinking of those times a lot lately.

I’ve tried to channel a lot of those feelings quite subtly into my studio mixes over the years—hopeless nostalgia, bittersweetness, a sad euphoria—more so on ones where I’m trying to achieve something other than a club-mix. The Sure Thing mix comes to mind especially, but that was also very influenced by the techno aspect of the series and certain life events. Whilst this feels very much like a spiritual successor to that mix, I didn’t want to be so subtle with this one. It’s a straight ode to a single perfect 24 hours that summer, and all the tunes that I was listening to back then, plus some that capture that perfect world-at-your-feet, carefree, teen vibe for me. It covers many moods and feelings of a hot day down at the beach and the transition as the sun sets and you’re getting ready to dance the night away.

I’ve wanted to record something like this for a long time, something that kind of felt like a timeless mix CD, and think you gave me the best opportunity and timing in wanting to put it together, especially as I’ve been doing that same cycle route every other weekend whilst down here."

Beyond simply playing music, he actively cultivates an organic relationship with the scene through various endeavors. He's notably the planner behind the electronic music festival 'PROMPT', delivering fresh audiovisual experiences, and a co-founder of the underground music community 'tread', contributing to the establishment of a free and vibrant music ecosystem. He also maintains an active presence as a member of the renowned electronic music label 'Oslated'. Currently, he operates 'atdge', a DJ bar in Seoul, directly engaging and connecting with listeners on the ground.

2009년 디제이를 시작한 그는 자신만의 독자적인 노선을 개척하며 한국 전자음악 씬의 발전을 위해 꾸준히 헌신해 왔다. 그는 단순히 음악을 플레이 하는 것을 넘어, 다양한 활동을 통해 씬과의 유기적인 관계를 형성하고 있다. 대표적으로 전자음악 페스티벌 ‘PROMPT’ 의 기획자로서 새로운 시청각적 경험을 선사하고 있으며, 언더그라운드 음악 커뮤니티 ‘tread’ 의 공동 설립자로서 자유로운 음악 생태계 조성에 기여하고 있다. 또한, 유수의 전자음악 레이블 ‘Oslated’의 멤버로서 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 현재는 서울의 디제이 바 ‘atdge’ 를 직접 운영하며, 현장에서 리스너들과 직접적으로 더욱 가까이에서 소통하고 있다.

Shaped by the pulse of NYC’s 80s/90s hip hop scene and early exposure to Haitian Vodou, Blacklauren’s style is both grounded in heritage and forward-reaching. His sets unfold like journeys — hypnotic, layered, and rich with narrative.

Programa especial centrado en el universo de Jan Jelinek, productor alemán que lleva años experimentando con el sonido, siempre en los márgenes, siempre buscando texturas nuevas.

Lo interesante de Jelinek es que trabaja con varios pseudónimos, cada uno con su propia identidad. Como Farben, explora un microhouse lleno de clicks, loops y detalles microscópicos. Con Gramm, se acerca a una electrónica más dub, más cálida, casi flotante. Y bajo su propio nombre, se suelta del ritmo y construye paisajes sonoros entre el ambient, el collage y el minimalismo.

En esta selección vamos a pasear por sus diferentes facetas, escuchando cómo un mismo artista puede hablar varios idiomas musicales sin perder su esencia.

Closing sets come with built-in pressure. But at this year’s Perpendicular Festival, Saturday wrapped up not with spectacle, but with style. Valencia-based DJ and producer Facundo, a standout discovery from the city’s ever-surprising scene, took control of the final stretch with a set that was patient, fluid, and full of character. It moved with intent, keeping the energy alive without ever pushing too hard. The kind of set that made you forget the time, anchored in rhythm and shaped by subtle shifts. A groove that spoke softly but hit deep.

Facundo’s approach to the closing slot was a slow reveal. He opened with broken, syncopated patterns before sliding seamlessly into a tight four-to-the-floor pulse. The tension built with restraint - dark, shadowy techno moments came and went, but the release was never forced. This was a set that traded hype for nuance, showmanship for control. Polyrhythmic elegance in the woods.

Dave Twomey [Mariana // aka Tr nch / Time To Express] UK

Dave's first gig was at Lakota in Bristol in 1998 a few months after being persuaded by none other than Paul Rose aka Scuba to buy his own turntables. Innumerable student club nights there interspersed with a year in Germany DJing boat parties, clubs & afterhours sessions brings us 4 years on, to 2002. In his final at Bristol studying law, Dave won Muzik magazine's monthly mixing competition Bedroom Bedlam. In the summer following graduation he once again made the decision to move, this time to Japan, falling on his feet by coming to a regular spot at Yellow within the first 3 months. During his 8 year stay he held various residencies at Yellow (now Eleven), Air, Womb, Colors Studio & Warehouse702 injecting a dose of the UK & European underground into the Tokyo club scene. A keen & prolific event organiser over the years, various projects led him to his current focus MARIANA - deep, trippy & liquid techno events inspired centrally by the Mariana trench & its fearsome creatures. Past guests include the likes of Ben Klock, Peter Van Hoesen, Mike Parker & Delta Funktionen. Dave's MARIANA DUB SESSION PODCAST, showcasing the Mariana sound, has received praise from the likes of MLZ & Peter Van Hoesen among others.

Performing as Dave Twomey what results is an organic, ever-evolving blend of steppy rhythms, tech house, techno and more, as much at ease performed on 100% vinyl as using Ableton, CDJ's or Serato. The present is everything; old, new & potential all wrapped up into one little journey. Fireworks, however you look at it.

Dave is currently back in the UK tending to his roots, focusing on production, but interspersed with regular trips to Japan to continue Mariana & tour. Dave's debut 12-inch release under his TR NCH alias was a collaboration with IORI on TIME TO EXPRESS, described in press as 'mesmerising' with support from the likes of Cio D'Or, Laurent Garnier, & Chris Liebing among others. His alter ego & production alias Tr nch takes a more purist tone,  exploring the underbelly of techno - pulsating, throbbing soundscapes that mirror & draw influence from the deepest place on earth, the Mariana trench in the Pacific Ocean. The Tr nch DJ and live set is deep, ephemeral & liquid techno, and like any Dave Twomey set draws heavily on a love of hypnotic music, a deep love of vinyl & the experience of a varied, 15 year DJ career which has already touched Russia, Argentina, China, Chile, Germany, Paraguay, Brasil and Japan … 

More production collaborations, Mariana tours & events in Japan and Europe, and a Mariana vinyl label are in the works. 

Dave continues to engage his passion despite a diagnosis of stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2010.
