At the beginning of the pandemic, my friend, the experimental guitarist & composer Dom Bouffard asked me if I would be up to doing a record together. Our only aim was to journal the calamitous moment through music, knowing full-well we’d likely not see each other during the process - and we never did. The result was "Killing Horizon", a project we used to process the event and our anxieties surrounding potential aftermaths. Unsurprisingly, the record still feels timely.

From a compositional and recording perspective, we played on various post-apocalyptic narratives: looping performances recorded to tape, like messages from a bygone era, as they slowly disintegrate as in “Mirage”; or in the unravelling piano based track “The Ground” the track unspools like the advent of a nefarious pathology; and in “Cathedral”, Dom’s guitars (gosh I have no idea how many) are stretched and then gloriously re amped one-by-one into a wall of a sound that can fairly be described as “nuclear”. Needless to say, we had fun with the concept.

At any rate, we hope you enjoy it. It’s a dark record but sometimes it’s comforting to go there and know others feel the same.

The Space Between Us

Commissioned by Professor Eric Knight for USYD Innovation Week Gala Dinner 2019

I have always been fascinated in creating works that involve inter-disciplinary collaborations, especially between science, technology and music. A Dyadic Moment, written for violin, cello and piano, is my musical sonification of the strange and spectacular phenomenon that is quantum entanglement. Some like Einstein say it’s “Spooky Action” while others are convinced it’s “predetermined”, somehow two ‘entangled’ particles are able to instantaneously correlate their spins regardless of how far apart they are from each other. 
Two particles, embodied by the violin and cello, start in a sparse manner performing gestures that are seemingly irrelevant and disconnected from one another. The piano acts as a mediator that slowly urges the violin and cello to rhythmically sync. A growing momentum drives the instruments to their virtuosic extremities as they all begin to meld into one musical entity.  A tonally ambiguous ending is left up to the interpretation of the audience, highlighting the enigmatic beauty of our world.
