Jo Wallace stumbled across the previously independently released, blue eyed soul masterpiece, ‘Keep Falling For It’ during a late night trawl of the internet at the end of 2023. She was instantly smitten and the ensuing correspondence with the band, Jonson, Jonson and Jonson, ensured that the release of this heartbreakingly, beautiful composition would go out on Ramrock Blue. This first release comes courtesy of Joe Cang deciding that one of the band’s soulful, thematic instrumentals was worthy of his highly evocative vocals delivering his tender but wise lyric about the world’s insatiable appetite for the media’s alternative truths, thus creating ‘Keep Falling For It’. I defy you not to be reduced to a mass of emotionally uplifted molecules by the time you’ve finished listening to ‘Keep Falling For It’

Jonson, Jonson and Jonson comprise of three humans - one studio - no stress. Why ‘Jonson Jonson and Jonson’ you ask? ‘Cang, Schogger and Thornalley’ sounded like reputable accountants so their names were swapped for the partially trusted and familial throwaway ‘Jonson Jonson and Jonson’. Formed randomly during an afternoon studio session, these three, well seasoned songwriter/ producers began by improvising on a vibe and immediately recorded it live as a trio with Danny Schogger on piano, Joe Cang on bass and vocals and Phil Thornalley playing the drums, and the track came together quickly, with much laughter and little planning. 

Individually, Danny Schogger has written and produced hits for Celine Dion and performed with George Michael. Joe Cang co-wrote the No. 1 ‘Shine’ for reggae supergroup, Aswad, worked with the iconic Hall & Oates as well as releasing music as a solo artist signed with the legendary Clive Davis. Phil has produced ‘The Cure’, written songs for Natalie Imbruglia and performed in Bryan Adams’ band.

The story begins in the early 00’s when Joseph Malik and Shuya Okino were both signed to Munich based label, Compost Records and Joseph was on tour in Japan with iconic soul artist, Terry Callier. Shuya showed up at the gig and took Joseph to his legendary night club ‘The Room’ in Shibuya, Tokyo and from that early meeting, a bond of musical brotherhood began. They stayed in touch even after Joseph had left Compost, and the pair met up on a regular basis when Shuya visited Edinburgh as his wife, Jo, is from the same city. Joseph had always wanted to work with Shuya after hearing his production skills on Kyoto Jazz Massive’s releases – the group Shuya founded with his brother, Yoshihiro in 1994. So, when Shuya remixed ‘Just to be free’ on Joseph’s ‘Diverse 3’ 2021 album, the precedent was set.

Early in 2025, Shuya reworked Joseph’s track, ‘Adult Contemporary’, taken from his highly acclaimed 2023 ‘Proxima Ebony’ LP and, along with ROOT SOUL, Shuya delivers the full ‘Chic funk dance’ experience, all recorded in Tokyo, Japan and mastered by Darren Morris at North Street West studio in the UK. Guaranteed to cause maximum dance floor damage this summer.
