Canadian emcee, SMOOV Daddy born David Matthew Jones fell in love with hip hop in the early 1980’s
and while away at college in Illinois in 1992, he tried his hand at writing and reciting rhymes. He began performing at house
parties and college events with fellow emcee Lamont “Yella Boy’ Loving and the band, Burn. The arrangement lasted one
year and upon returning to Canada, SMOOV sought out opportunities to continue performing and honing his craft.
In 1993, SMOOV, the Slightly Malicious Orator w/ Overwhelming Versatility hooked up with Germaine “G-mainE” Ramsey to
create the C.I.A., the Creative Influence Alliance. The duo performed at parties, bars and competitions for several years
throughout SW Ontario.
After the release of their single “Mr. Devil” in 1999, it became evident that family life had to take precedence for G-mainE and
in 2001 SMOOV Daddy began to pursue a solo career by moving to Vancouver, BC and touring the Lower Mainland bar
circuit for several months. He also tried his hand at acting and although he enjoyed the experience, it was short lived and he
returned to Ontario to raise his son and work full time in his home town factories with the mindset that at 30, his opportunity
to have a career as an emcee had come to an end.
During the summer of 2009 SMOOV returned to British Columbia, met fellow hip hop enthusiast and blues guitarist Sean
Rose and was inspired to pick up the microphone again. This in turn opened the doors to perform several times a week for
four years in Whistler, BC and several venues around Canada’s west coast.
Soon SMOOV was back into the swing of things and had rekindled his desire to perform and recite rhymes for hip hop fans.
When asked to participate in an audition for Cover Me Canada with Whistler band, Local Motive, he agreed and the group set
out to create songs and perform as often as possible at area clubs and fundraisers. Although their cover of Alannah Myles’
Black Velvet was not selected for the competition, the experienced proved educational for SMOOV and he has been able to
carry the knowledge he gained forward with a greater resolve to have his words heard by the masses.
Over the course of twenty years, SMOOV has developed into a high energy performer who uses intricate rhymes and a
variety of subject matter to keep crowds rocking. His silky, baritone voice is as sweet and smooth as caramel on the tracks
for the ladies; I’ve Got Something For Ya and Letz Get It On. His songs entice, educate and inspire all while raging against
the machine that is the music industry and its perpetual abundance of over-hyped, under-skilled entertainers that currently
overwhelm the radio air waves.
After a many delays and being misled by a shady management company, David decided he was capable of doing things for
himself and as SMOOV Daddy, he was able to record and release his first single, I’ve Got Something For Ya featuring Jason
X and in the summer of 2012 he produced, directed and released the video online.
Following the official release of S.M.O.O.V. the EP on January 23, 2013 SMOOV Daddy created his own opportunities to
perform in Ontario by starting SHIELD Music and Entertainment and was booked and performed throughout BC in 2014.
2016 brought the release of the full length album, Daddy's Home which saw only local success.
2019 David acted as executive producer on a compilation project for SHIELD Music, The 519ers Vol. 1 in which he compiled
some of SW Ontario's most talented rappers and producers together for an eclectic Hip-Hop album that is a true
representation of the 519 area code.
Currently SMOOV is working on his newest solo project which is scheduled to be a 3 CD anthology to be released late 2019
