An expert selector and connoisseur, the ‘gentleman DJ’ understands the history of the music that he plays and that he’s playing it for a new generation altogether. He’s been instrumental in the establishment of popular disco nights such as his own XOYO in London, while his remixes of disco classics have been burning up dancefloors across the world. About to headline a show for Mark Knight’s Toolroom at Studio 338 this week, we sat down to chat with the dance music icon about his history, his work, and about why disco will always endure.

Spanish DJ, producer and Night Shift records boss Javi Frias presents a new EP of disco edits that take the vibes of the 70s and re-fit them for the current dancefloor. As you might imagine, each of the four tracks seemingly has PARTY stamped across it in giant capital lettering, from the opening stomper 'Hot Damn!' with its bright-as-a-button brass section and the wah wah guitar of 'Dance To The Music' to the proto-house of 'The Spirit'. But the best is saved to last - the bendy funk bassline gymnastics of 'Feel Good', quite irresistible.

"Nu-disco newcomer Eau Claire is bringing Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" into the modern age. The original song was released almost 40 years ago, but the Washington, DC-based DJ/producer adds a thumping beat, infectious piano melodies and an array of synthesizers to the oldies jam to update it for today's dance floor.  

The track starts with an Oliver Nelson-esque backbeat before Stevie's lyrics about his romance with a high class woman come in. The piano jumps on top of the vocals, taking over the listener's ears and body. Synthesizer lines playfully bound around the lyrics before Stevie gets into his first chorus and second verse with a deep beat backing him up. Everything comes to a climax around the middle of the third minute, with Eau Claire daring her audience not to dance to the irresistible tune."

Dj since the early 2000s, he started very young to appreciate house music in its colors and numerous shapes, especially the underground side of it. His dj sets are broad representations of deep rhythm, with sonorities that tend to touch both warm deep house vibes and cold sonorities such as Detroit-techno. He has played in many clubs in the Northern part of Italy and Europe. As producer he has released tracks for glorious labels such as Nervous Records, King Street Sounds and Sungate remixing big artists such as Enzo Avitabile and Dole&Kom. His tracks have been played by electronic music icons such as Laurent Garnier, John Digweed, The Blessed Madonna, Brian Tappert, Delano Smith, and Mousse T. , to name a few.
He's also founder and label manager of the vinyl only label 'Steamy Pizza Box'.
In 2014 he launched his new side project Vaudafunk: an alias totally focused on house, funky house and re-edits world and that draws inspiration from the late 90s disco-flavored house music.
