Melancholy Music For Melancholic Times

I've been struggling to record a proper mix for a while... every time I sit down and start, I can't decide which direction to go..  so much of what I decide to play is directed by the setting and the crowd. So mostly I've just stuck to dropping some left-field goodness on the Radio and playing live. But recently I went over to Manchester to see Mr Scruff and Luke Una for a Sunday day party at Band on The Wall... and it hit me... I should record an E-Soul mix.

So armed with this newly found inspiration I locked up in my room for 3 days and pictured myself playing at Magic Hour on a hot and sticky summer eve at some festival or other. Starting dreamy, a few push and pulls, till the sunsets and going for a deeper attack.... then dropping down for a mellow finish.

E-Soul at Eventide for Dancing & Transcending

A hodge-podge mix of genre jumping goodness defying any one direction or any genre. On theme of 'Joy'.


Skipping effortlessly through silly little blues ditties, to spiritual gospel, dances through Afro-Latin rhythms, spins into Bollywood disco grooves, and diving into more electronic basslines, and as it happens… quite a few non-English covers of hit songs… there’s something quite joyful about an old familiar with a new twist. Peppered in are some wise words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and philosopher, and The School of Life founder, Alain de Botton. 

Joy is not just one thing: joy is dancing, joy is sharing, joy is making others smile, joy is love, joy is music, joy is being silly… and this mix is very very serious about being silly.

When I was asked to make a mix for Camomile Tea the first thing I wanted to know was how long did it need to be… as I had some beautiful long tracks I’ve been wanting to work into a project for a while. When Scott told me it had to be an hour I balked, but after a healthy debate about the relationship between creativity and limitations, and an offer of two hours if I ‘really’ wanted it… I decided to take the challenge.

Originally devised as just 3 x 20min tracks (I’m not petty… you’re petty!) Once I started putting them together they didn’t quite flow right and I knew I needed some bits in between to really tie them together. Heavily inspired by the Johns Hopkins Psilocybin Research Playlist, which is the source of 70% of the tracks, the idea was to offer a sound-bath which was both deeply meditative and hauntingly beautiful.
