Week 1 Sound Design - The Telephone

I was inspired by John Oswald's blending of live recordings of every-day sounds with electronically generated synthetic sounds. I mixed the sound of a train travelling down a track with a filtered sawtooth synth that eventually opened up into a richer sound. The synth jumps between octaves and the rhythm of those leaps and the notes creates the movement in the piece. The idea to base the track around a train came from the idea that trains only move in a straight line following a set track and can't deviate from it, just like the song can't deviate from the pitch. But just like how on a train the views change and make the journey interesting whilst staying in one relative straight line, the exploration of different timbres and voices playing the same note in different octaves creates a story and progression despite never leaving the note of A.

The idea is that the track starts out with curiosity in nature and it's peaceful and innocent until, in the second half, machinery and engineering comes in and disrupts the peace of the birds and natural sounds. this creates a harsh contrast.
