My emotional Emptiness

This set has significant meaning to me.  It was dedicated to someone very special. A lot of love and good intensions were put into this set during my performance because of one big reason.  It was for my soon to be born son.  The love and appreciation I received during this set was something truly unforgettable.  Not to the mention the setting, sunset, people dancing above me on our artcar The BOOMBOX, smiles everywhere and an energy so strong you could feel the hair on your arm standing up.

I'm grateful that I can play a live instrument (mostly piano) while I take people on a musical journey.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did when I played this set.

Afrikaburn Friday Sunset Boombox 2022

Space and time both play a role in pølaroit’s music. A felt connection to Jonas and Marius’ hometowns  in Northern Germany, their geography, as well as a  sense of pertaining to a specific instant in time, a  generation, are both expressed in the duo’s strain  of melodic deep house, “We see our music as a  snapshot of time and music,” they say. The chosen  name for the duo, pølaroit, is a reference to this  idea of capturing a moment and it tributes both  their northern roots (Polar) as well as the birthplace  of techno (Detroit).  

Jonas and Marius, both in their mid-twenties, grew  up near Hanover - yet it was only in 2018 that they  crossed paths for the first time. Prior to that, Jonas  had been developing his own work as a pianist,  influenced by neo-classical artists such as Nils  Frahm and Olafur Arnalds as well as scoring pieces  for film and advertisement. Marius on the other hand, who had been playing the drums since a  young boy, started his musical path at sixteen  deeply influenced by his interest in percussion and  the urban electronic music scene of the time. When  both met at a Christmas market in Hanover, after  one too many cups of glühwein, they set a studio  date just for fun. From that first day it became  immediately clear to both that Jonas’ melancholic piano melodies weaved themselves seamlessly to finish into otherwise hard-electro, “We love the imperfect, human touch and want to transport this feeling into electronic music,” says Jonas, “We recognised that everything gets faster and faster in our society, and that there is a certain perfectionism floating in our generation. That is not the way we see our music, we want to be more and more in the moment when creating,” adds Marius.  The EP’s track Underwater encompasses the desire for honesty by the use of a detuned piano, while the sound of waves that is heard throughout Cala calls forth a natural and earthly force. The title track, Pure features field recordings of a brick smashing against a wall – with it the veneer of perfection is also shattered. Their interest in “keeping things real" also informs the gear the duo chooses to work with - mainly analog synths and  tape machines - as well as, of course, their collaboration with singers Luna Morgenstern on Perfect Strangers and Margret on Underwater who add warmth and intimacy to tracks through their voices. Their quest for an authentic, unreproducible sound is also the reason why playing live is an important part of pølaroit’s act.  Through five incredibly catchy tracks, Pure is an EP which evokes nostalgia. The longing expressed through whimsical melodies and a full-bodied bass calls forth a time when things weren’t always polished or airbrushed. Such an approach has uncovered the magic at the heart of pølaroit’s music and what makes this enigmatic, astute duo so very special; their ability to create a mature and contemporary sound that retains purity.

pølaroit [Stil vor Talent / Ki Records] - Mix #148

It was night time and the full-ish moon was smiling down as the river flowed and all the creatures made their distinct sounds. A fire warmed our bodies as music feed our souls. 

Inspired by the human experience that unfolded in a beautiful container surrounded by Mother Nature. This set was a celebration of the journey’s ending … or was it the just beginning ;) I was in a complete flow state, I knew two tracks I wanted to start with and two towards the end. Tunes were pulled from many different pockets of my collection.

On the property was an amazing labyrinth. Our journey and realizations through it weaved their way into this set. I later googled life and labyrinth and found this:  

“Our life path can be viewed as a labyrinth guiding us to deeper meaning and fulfillment. Walking a labyrinth takes us through numerous twists and turns that symbolize the ebb and flow of life. Like the design of a labyrinth, what looks like an end point in life can also be a beginning point.” (link below)

I’m now obsessed with labyrinths!!! Thus the title of this release.

Snake started his dj career in 2000 when he went to London, the clubbing
capital of the world.  In 2001 he got his first gig.  By mid 2002 he was playing between 2-7 gigs a weekend at all major London venues: Camden Palace, Fridge, The Mass,
Scala, Brixton Academy(Now O2 Academy), The Cross, Turnmills and The End
to name a few. Every major promotion was now booking Snake: Frantic,
Fevah, Riot, Tasty, Heat and the London Calling DJ exhibition. Snake was
also one of the Guest DJ s alongside DJ Astrid (Netherlands #1 female DJ) at
Cosmic Waves in Norway. At the time Snake he was mostly playing hard
dance and trance alongside names like Lisa Lashes, Eddie Halliwell, Paul Van
Dyk, BK, Nick Sentience, K90, Lab 4, Ian Betts, Andy Farley, Phil Reynolds,
Steve Hill, James Lawson, Ali Wilson, Matt Smallwood Jon Rundell and many
more.
In 2003 Snake was playing for events like the legendary Gallery alongside
Nick Warren, M.I.K.E, Randy Katana and Riley & Durrant. Snake came back
to SA in 2004 but was back in 2005 where a comeback event was held in his
honour at Pacha London with the event called: Snake Eyes . From 2005 he
took house music much more serious and before no time he was playing
house at most major venues: The White House, Scala, The End, Turnmills,
London Calling (DJ exhibition @ Earls Court Plaza) and more. He played
alongside UK house legends like, Tom Neville, Cheshire Cats, Tom Real,
Graeme Lloyd, Marcus Wallis, Ryan Briggs (MOS/Pascha), Lizzie Curious and
the legend himself Tall Pall.
SA venues: Kalahari Klik, Vacca Matta,
Chrome, Karma Lounge, Bang Bang Club, Guru Lounge, Bambu, Cu De Ta,
China White Shimmy Beach club and Club 89. Friendz SA boatparties

In SA Snake played alongside names like Josh Borrill, Kingsize, Leyton
Lea, Nick Supply, Dave Lea Thomas, Sascha Martinengo, Ian F, Crazy Whiteboy Coasta K,
Ryan Murgatroyd, Stereologic, Steph Deysel, Chris Sen, Mark Stent, DJ Fresh, Craig Da Sousa, Dino Moran and more. Snake also played the closing set alongside Brent Thought at the Gatecrasher Paul van Dyk event at Ostrich farm.
Snake is a DJ with excellent ability and technique. 
In November 2011 Snake became a partner of Bounce Productions with huge success with their day time Summer Beach Party at Beach Bar (Mykonos) pulling between 600 and a
1300 people to every party.
In 2012 Snake had his first tour to Ibiza where he played at Kanya, Beah Palace and Hotel Esvive representing Heat UK and Luckylife Ibiza.
In 2014 he returned to Europe to play Holland and Ibiza.  In Ibiza playing at Bora Bora and representing Luckylife Ibiza on the decks for the legendary Circ de la Nuit boat parties. 
In Holland he opened for Quintino at club Envy. 
Recent big parties & events: Kalmer Karma NYE, Windtown rooftop sessions with Len10 (Holland) and Giani Arragno (Pacha Ibiza), Café Chic and Afrikaburn 2015/16/17.
Snake collaborated with some of the dance scene’s biggest producers
like DMF (Italy/UK), Alf Bamford aka Technikal (UK), Trance maestro Ali
Wilson (UK) with their track reaching #6 in the top 20UK dance charts in
MixMag.  Currently he is also working on a collaboration album with dutch dj/producer Santoz Sambuka. He has worked with some of South Africa s biggest talents, Chris Sen and Khubu.

 Snake is the co-creator of The Dragon,also known as The Tankwa Draak at Afrikaburn. A mutant vehicle with a just under 30 000 watt soundsystem and a dj booth of dreams.  On there he played alongside legends like Stereo Express, Monolink, Wassim Younes, Loki Styx, Seth Swatz, Elias Dore and Hartojo.
