They came from the trees.

Now settled in fertile east London, Snapped Ankles maintain the feral energy of the forest. Fight or flight. Primal motorik rhythms, the rush of white noise and post-punk angles; an aural onslaught played out on homemade log synths, electrified guitars and sticks beating hell on taut animal skin.

Snapped Ankles have flourished in the sub-tropical climes of warehouse and squat parties, moving onto performance art collaborations with filmmakers and shows in unlikely locations such as barber shops, games arcade and the forests they once called home. They plough a singular furrow at improbable angles. The woodwose have discovered electricity and they’re not afraid to use it.

It once happened in that country (and this seems indeed strange) that a living creature was caught in the forest as to which no one could say definitely whether it was a man or some other animal, for no one could get a word from it or be sure that it understood human speech. It had the human shape, however, in every detail, both as to hands and face and feet, but the entire body was covered with hair as the beasts are.

"Having unearthed The Fugs CIA man some years before, we were shocked to discover a newer more sinister agency had taken over from the diatribe's protagonist so we updated Tuli Kupferberg's list of ills...

"Of course every time the song is now mentioned online, a blip of data triggers a filter that enters a file that rings a bell in a bunker deep under a mountain in Pennsylvania. So now the forest is full of agents looking for us, and we are taping up our microphones and cameras and walking backwards through our own footprints to shake them off..."

Snapped Ankles - CIA Man (NSA Man Violation)

Snapped Ankles have left the woods. They find themselves in the tree-lined cul-de-sacs of the suburbs that surround the concrete forest of the citadel. Amongst the trees here, are wooden posts with “For Sale” and “To Let” written in bold type. A new forest. Promises, promises.

They glimpse the sportswear-clad inhabitants busying themselves in their quest for physical and mental fitness, only to obliterate their senses at every opportunity. ‘Drink and Glide’ into this fast-paced living: the once revolutionary 1960s counter-cultural ideals now co-opted into lifestyle classes to enhance one’s sense of “betterness”.

Snapped Ankles eye up those in search of self-improvement through casual mindfulness while self-medicating to survive the mundanity of suburban living with mind-altering concoctions borrowed from the internet. The dose becomes the word. The word is… “TURN UP, DROP IN and WEIGH OUT!”

Snapped Ankles will be offering baby yoga classes in a warehouse near you soon.
