ABOUT THIS TRACK:
In their fourth studio album, Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 1, Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putman, Hilliard Greene and Federico Ughi again push the boundaries of their genre-defying music to explore new influences and negative space. The second track, “SignGhost Theatre” offers a particularly elegant representation of their more muted and orchestral sound. Putman plays Impressionistic melodies on piano, incorporating ambiguous tonality and extended harmonies. Holmes delivers nostalgic, lyrical clarinet solos, while Greene offers his own haunting and versatile arco performance on stand-up bass. Ughi diverges from steady rhythms to offer uniquely subdued and open drumming, and Carter returns to his perennial role as a multi-instrumental, chamber-focused facilitator, lending an added measure of coherence between musicians. The song embodies the mystery it’s intended to convey, gliding through expansive realms of the album’s quietly ambitious project.

UK-based musician Massimo Magee is relatively certain that this was the first free jazz concert made in a virtual venue. His innovative new album, Live in the Metaverse (to Evan Parker and John Coltrane), is defined by this sense of confident and playful originality. Magee recorded this performance by streaming live into a room called The OctoBar—a virtual performance space designed by his friend Alexander Feder—the tracks are riddled with the sounds of a slightly broken streaming signal: clicks, bleeps, pops, and other inexplicable noise that Magee suggests is akin to the ambience of a live performance, anything that might otherwise interrupt his smoothly-executed, extended clarinet solo. Opening with the short, reverb-focused track, “The Way In” gives the album a mystical, dazzling ambience and plenty of intentional electronic manipulation. It quickly gives way to “The Bout,” a 40-minute track for a conceptually simple performance that remains surprisingly throughout, allowing Magee to improvise over the layers of his unintentional broadcast delays and reverberations. The project is deeply inventive and beautifully performed, offering a new interpretation of live music’s possibilities on a virtual platform, and what Magee affirms is a “gesture of insistence that the spiritual mission of this music will (and must) continue, in spite of whatever obstacles may present themselves, materially or mentally, in the time to come.” This solo album joins Magee’s other 577 Records’ productions, with Tony Irving - Vitriol and the Third Oraculum (577 Records, 2020), the live recording of the Cyclone Trio - Cataclysm… Live at Cafe Oto (Orbit577, 2020) and precedes the December release of the Cyclone Trio - Electric (Orbit577, 2020).

Meeting for the first time as an acoustic duo in their collaborative album, The Unexpected Visitor, UK-based musicians Gus Garside and Hervé Perez explore the musical interpretations of a 13th Century Poem, “The Guest House” by Rumi. The album captures a series of improvisations played between March and May 2020, before and during the official UK lockdowns, some recorded in the same room together, some individually by each musician at home. This album is a selection of music from their original session and their telematic at-home improvisations, woven together by Rumi’s naturally evolving poetic narrative. Informed by the practice of deep listening, the musicians composed the album with angular melodic lines and abstract passages, exploring the resonant qualities and structural design of the saxophone and double bass. The tracks offer reflective and inviting duets, embodying the transient curiosity and sincere openness of the poem they’re inspired by, “This being human is a guest house / Every morning a new arrival.”
