Like an undercover cop, the best grooves grip you before you even realise it's happened.
Hooked, lead track on nineteen79's latest dispatch from Planet Freakout, has you in a headlock well before it's finished building.
You can thank/blame an indecently funky bassline, skittering percussion and gently undulating arpeggios, drifting through the arrangement, floating in and out of reach.
Then the sound of woozy chaos. A people-losing-their shit synth riff riding a filter all the way to a breakdown that's warm, wonky, wired.
And that's when it finally drops - you're hooked.
On East Coast Roller, the buzz-baiting New Zealand duo go deep, showcasing a hitherto unheard side of their sonic expertise.
The bassline, hypnotic and - you guessed it - rolling, provides a rock-solid grounding for pulsing, propulsive off-beat analogue stabs and glassy eyed electric piano motifs, all punctuated with a tripping, gripping vocal sample.
The world isn't short of deep tech producers. This EP underlines why nineteen79 are serious contenders.

Sneaky Records are proud to present a stunning debut from Ian Blevins. The British producer has been conjuring up a melancholic style that draws upon classic disco, soul, and house as much as much driving acid and techno for the best part of a decade. Those who’ve followed his rock solid run of releases on Futureboogie, Colour Series, Audio Parallax and more, will find ‘909 Balloons’ a beguiling addition to the catalogue. The EP is also a canny portrait of Blevins’ international DJ schedule, with co-productions and remixes from some talented friends bolstering the strength of the producer’s own solo cuts.

Blevins’ sensuous, yet bruising sound is nowhere more in evidence than on 909 Balloons’ title track, where rippling kicks, toms and acid bass underpin languorous house piano chords and urgent pants of vocal sampling. Likewise, Blevins’ collaborative productions with fellow Brit, Phil Moody, under the Al Gobi alias generate an unusual momentum by pitting mid-tempo percussion muscle and breezy textural work against one another. On “Libanese”, porous synths render deep acid squelches strangely weightless, and “I Need” wrenches a similar cloudy elegance from clipped vocal samples.

The strength of the EP’s two remixes are a testament to the quality of Blevins’ original material. A take on “909 Balloons” by the prolific Ashworth is a Four Tet-esque twinkling, propulsive club tool, and Bird of Paradise’s “Libanese” remix emphasises the alien extravagance of the original with unnerving washes of ambient noise, and far-out drum machine licks.

We couldn’t resist to release this soulful boogie disco house joint GOLDEN GIRLS from Tigerskin & Jack Jenson featuring vocals from south african rising star Lazarusman.

The both producers about their session: „We were looking  for inspiration by listening to various bassline stems freshly recorded the week before. And we checked the secret studio archive which includes the recordings of almost 30 years of Tigerskins work. Looking for hidden treasures in hundreds of recordings we stumbled across a simple and unreleased drum arrangement.

Just for fun we added one of our basslines to it and recorded a bunch of melodies with some of the old Moogs. You know you're working on 'one of those songs' when each member delivers exactly the ingredient that the others were thinking of when working on their part. When Lazarusman sent the vocals and as we listened the first time to the demo version of what would become ‚Golden Girls' we both looked at each other and agreed that this might be our best work so far.“

The last track 'Sandwiches' features long time collaborator Ian Blevins and contains fuzzed and thumping kicks, a muscular bass line to keep things moving, and a couple drops of acid flavours with rhodes chords to smooth things out. Topped off with some soulful vocal chops, this one's a bonafied workout! A stunning low deep groove for any Theo Parrish or Marcellus Pittman fans out there.

Langenberg has been busy releasing his distinctive brand of knowledgeable deepness for well over half a decade now. As co-founder of the Essen-based label Mild Pitch, the man otherwise knows as Max Heesen has been responsible for some sublime moments in house, both on his own label, and for imprints such as Liebe*Detail, Drumpoet Community and Poker Flat.

Here, Desseous Recordings get their hands on the sumptuous release The Finisher. Informed and influenced by the classic Detroit sound, Langenberg produces yet another exceptional transmission. The title track is a smooth like liquid gold, yet contains a dub-tinged techno edge reminiscent of Langenberg’s Ribn project with Manuel Tur. The soulful piano interplay is pure Detroit meets Essen, and combines to produce one of the year’s standout moments.

Next up is Wait State, a bouncing groove featuring Langenberg’s trademark crisp drums and percussion, and a fantastic revolutionary vocal sample.

Sun and Sorrow is on a more driving tip, but maintains a familiar minor key motor city deepness. Also present here as a digital bonus is Sun and Sorrow Dub, an essential rework and a dub-wise dancefloor excursion for the heads.


Wait State

City Fly return for their 15th release, backed by serious muscle in the form of NY*AK, and fellow contributors Ian Blevins and Mark Hand, who make up the stomping and spectacular Afghan Jams EP. Starting strong is ‘Return’, with a relentless dub techno energy, graced later by soft vocals and euphoric violin strings making for an epic dancefloor anthem. ‘Slick’, with Mark Hand, veers off into a loose, crackly acid trip. It’s followed by ‘Troia’, rounding off side A with an all-out party of flutes and keys over one infectious ecosystem of drums. Then, on side B, ‘We Both Know’ comes through; NY*AK’s eye-catching, sample-heavy jam with Ian Blevins with an eerie bassline. And the EP concludes with title track ‘Afghan Jam’, featuring Mark Hand - a special groove captured mid-session. Something a house head can easily get lost in.
