Meanwhile we made it to the end of May and summer is just around the corner. This tape is dedicated to the Northern Gannet, a powerful, majestic and yet calm seabird, which is native to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and has its only German breeding site on the island of Helgoland. The German name of this bipedal avian is "Basstölpel", which consequently contains the name of the most important element of electronic music as well. I hope this wonderful fusion of synergies can be transported to you through the sounds of this month's mix! Namasté!

Happy August everyone! I recently got the honour to play an amazing gig at a small festival called "Zaubermühle". Unfortunately the set was not fully recorded, so I decided to create a new one based on the tracks I used that night. I really hope this can at least to some extent recreate the magic vibes surrounding us back then. Enjoy!

Welcome to the premiere of a new project that is dedicated to nature by heart: 

MARIPOSA 

Providing the listeners an exclusive auditory journey, the main focus will be on experiencing harmonically mixed sounds, melodies and basslines up to live recorded jam sessions. A small but yet neat side effect: The artist of each respective episode is given the opportunity to share his or her personal story describing their strongest connection to nature to the audience. This way, an individualized link between nature and human perception will be described and thereby created. 

I believe each of us has something like that inside. It only varies how fast you begin the inner journey of finding, defining and appreciating this connection. Maybe all it takes is a little inspiration from others that we can already identify with on different levels. But once this connection is made, the willingness to do something for the preservation of our biodiversity and health of the ecosystems arises very naturally. How could it be any other way.

After pointing out their story, the artists will have the opportunity to share with the listener an NGO or other fundraising campaign of their choice that supports the conservation of any natural habitat, biotope or species with which they most identify. 

As an ultimate result, each episode will deliver a unique sound experience and simultaneously focus on a distinctive area of nature, based on the individual selection of the featured artists, that can be supported by donations of the listeners if they enjoyed the mix. 

The name "Mariposa" is derived from the Spanish word for butterfly/moth and represents the absolutely transformative potential of nature that can be found in many places and is only waiting for the right time to unfold its mysterious beauty. We don't always have to question things. Let's let the magic happen and appreciate it for what it is every now and then. Namasté!

THIS EPISODE:

Born and raised in some beautiful green surroundings, I always had the calming natural influence of forests and small mountains, which has been inspiring me ever since I can think. Until today this connection has continuosuly grown and there’s no place I feel more at home than the outdoors. Later in life I then developed a particularly deep connection to the ocean and the element of water in general. Connecting myself with the sea through surfing and diving is meditation and pure healing. Becoming aware of one's own powerlessness once the mighty, energetic flow of the waves get ahold of you creates this conscious state of humbleness and deep respect. All you can do is surrender. Because oceans are a huge playground but at the same time the foundation of life for me and many others and still leave so much room for exploration, I find it especially important to protect this environment. The fact that all life on earth originates from the sea and still depends in large part on the health of marine ecosystems fascinates me on a whole other level. No oceans, no life - get wit' it!

ARTIST'S MESSAGE:

I lived in a rather rural village for most of my childhood and adolescence. Ironically, I really only found my connection to nature during my university years, which I spent in the urban center of a big city. I went to most places by foot in those years and started paying much more attention to my environment. Exploring the city and finding all kinds of interesting and aesthetic locations was a lot of fun.
At the same time this new habit of enjoying my environment allowed me to rediscover my home. Long walks over the fields surrounding the village became my go-to activity during holidays. Soon I felt like after the degree was finished, my next station had to be more rural again, with more natural spaces accessible for me to explore.
I was super happy when a job opportunity right at the biggest lake in Bavaria presented itself. Now I can spend my break sitting at the water and watching the distant mountains beyond the other shore. I live on a rather remote farm, surrounded only by fields, forests and a lake. Naturally, I spend a lot of my free time on exhaustive walks through the beautiful landscape, and music is a loyal companion to frame the experience.
It is not always progressive electronic music, but it often is. These walks for me are opportunities to really immerse myself in longer pieces, to put together set lists for mixes like this or just create nice playlists. At the same time my fascination with and connection to nature grew and keeps growing with every walk. Paying attention to my environment keeps teaching me about myself and my place in the world, and right now my favourite place to learn is the forest behind the farm.

Aside from being a refuge for many people nowadays, natural forests provide protection against erosion, floods, drought, rockfall and avalanches. They are important for the climate, filter the air and store carbon. Forests thereby also contribute to the compensation of CO2 emissions, especially through CO2 storage in the forest soil. They are biotic communities for countless species and are therefore particularly important for biodiversity. Healthy forests are not only a valuable recreational area, but at the same time even an important economic factor. 
In order for the forest to fulfill these important functions for life in the long term, we as humans should do everything we can to reduce the stresses on these ecosystems and strengthen the stability of our forests, as they can only adapt to changing environmental conditions in the long term.

ARTIST'S MESSAGE: 

According to my understanding of the unity of nature, my connection to it lies basically self-explanatory, as with every component of this unity, in the natural origin of myself.  As part of the whole miracle what we call reality. This connection exists in my opinion by the nature of things itself. Because it is after all one and the same.

That on the infinite playground of space-time from the fundamental components of our world and under the rules of nature something as wonderful and fascinating as life in all its diversity and complexity has been able to form fills me to this day with deep amazement. It shows me again and again clearly how improbable and unique each way from us into the here and now has run.

Many people tend to separate themselves from the world we live in and see themselves as a single individual instead of accepting their obvious unity with their environment and the responsibility that comes with it. Only when we develop a consciousness of how everything is entangled and begin to understand ourselves as a part of it, can a sustainable harmonious coexistence develop.

In my guest mix for the Mariposa Podcast, I wanted to incorporate the above philosophy and hope that the idea becomes clear, that there are no such things as individual pieces standing alone for themselves, as they would literally be alone, that is, all-one.

Their goal is to save the slowest and therefore unfortunately often unjustly condemned mammals of the planet in a rapidly changing world. 

Sloths are the ultimate creatures of habit. They are perfectly adapted for life high up in the canopy of tropical rainforests where they have little need to ever descend to the ground. However, the rainforest habitat that the sloths depend on is becoming more and more disturbed. Roads, farms, towns and cities now dominate the landscape, cutting the once continuous forest into smaller and more isolated segments. 

The sloths simply cannot adapt to this rapidly changing environment. Saving these incredible animals from extinction therefore requires innovative and long-term conservation solutions that will target both the human and sloth populations, with the goal of developing sustainable ways in which humans and sloths can coexist.

SloCo has developed a range of strategies and programs which aim to achieve this objective in Costa Rica. These range from increasing habitat connectivity in urban areas to educating children in local communities and conducting high quality scientific research into many different aspects of sloth biology and ecology.

Hey there, 

Hope you’re enjoying my guest mix for the Mariposa podcast series! :)

This one is dedicated to the ocean - the place where I feel the most alive whenever I’m experiencing it.

Being passionate about watersports, I got into kitesurfing at the North Sea a few years ago. For me it’s funny and fascinating at the same time how our species comes up with ideas like that - constructing a kite and a board to combine the elements wind and water. As if experiencing only one wouldn’t be enough… ;)
But of course, kitesurfing instantly got me hooked (literally) on the first try.

In appreciation to be able to do such cool things in nature, I want to give something back: 

The project that I would like to introduce to you is my own. 
HOILER -  A clothing brand with the aim to rescue seals in the North Sea. (www.hoiler.de)

The idea popped up right after my brother and I met a little seal out on the water while kitesurfing. Shortly after we discovered a seal hospital on the German island “Föhr”, where volunteers take care of injured or infected seals.

Boom - Happy New Year everybody!

I hope everybody had a smooth transition into the new year and spent the night in whatever way was best at this moment - regardless if it was a party, a wonderful social gathering or just a super chill and introspective night! :)

I myself was honored to play two sets at the NYE Party of the Basecamp Climbing Community in the Mountains of Tenerife - one at night and one afterhour closing set. This is the recording of my afterhour in the early morning, celebrating and dancing into the first moments of the new year with some beautiful people! 

I had an unforgettable night and shared the decks with two other great and powerful DJ's from Brazil and Finland. The setting in general was a very special one as it was also the first time I played here on the Canary Islands - hopefully many more sessions to come. 

Thank you for everybody who came, danced and celebrated with me and thanks to you out there for listening. Keep up the high vibrations and share love! :)

felt like going into a deep, slow journey today which lead to the recording of this spontaneous set. this powerful & intuitive flow of musical selection could work quite well for an extensive yoga & meditation unit as well as a creative session, being productive or just chilling out in space. enjoy 🌀

Camino del Pájaro

“Árbol Lunar” - the yin part of my project "Equilibrio". 🌙

I personally link this part more to the spiritual & inner world. With a very meditative entry to the mix, Árbol Lunar is guiding us through the rather calm, receptive and sheltered energies of organic downtempo, folktronica and electrocumbia with a lot of diverse cultural influence from ancient central & South American rhythms and melodies often merged with shamanic spirit. 

It’s this type of music that has been deeply touching the introspective, creative and self-explorative part of my being this year and has given me guidance and safety. The vibrant, warm and passionate flows are somehow in very strong resonance with something deep inside of me and evoke this very gentle, determined feeling of universal connection and knowing that everything is going its way as it should.

Árbol Lunar

“Raíz del Sol” - the yang part of my project "Equilibrio". 🌞

In this mix I am creating a transition from an initial continuation of the previous rather shamanic journey into new spheres with extremely pushing, driving directions of very playful & dirty downtempo music as I would describe it. The rolling & creaky basslines drive us through a very expressive sound experience and I personally link this part more to the material & outer world. 

Listening and dancing to this can help us release so much tension and let things like emotional blockades or persistent thought-patterns go that don’t belong to us anymore. 

This is the style of music that has been surrounding me a lot on the many beautiful festivals and events I went to this summer around Berlin and the rest of Germany and I connect a lot of beautiful memories with this. In the end of this mix we are coming out of the journey with a soft landing provided by the song “yang” by Coss & Iorie - there couldn’t have been a better name for this track.

Raíz Del Sol

This recording of my most recent gig at MaHalla reflects the shift in musical style that I went through during the past months. I am noticing that I can authentically find myself more & more in the spheres of deep, tribal & somewhat mystical sounds of progressive down- and midtempo music. This sonic journey is infused with shamanic and later on psychedelic influences before rounding the journey up with some cloudy, dreamy tracks to generate a smooth transition back into reality. About this journey:
Sinfonía Lunar - a sonic compilation in honour of our beautiful & ever-present planetary companion. Always looking so utterly beautiful in all of her diverse appearances. While affecting so much of our daily lives with many of us not even consciously noticing what I appreciate most about her is the cyclic energy she delivers. Initiating as well as terminating different periods. This mix was recorded during the New Moon in the beginning of October and represents not only the shift into a new lunar cycle but also the slow shift from the super dynamic & high energy summer season into the shorter, slower and cosier days of autumn and winter. It’s time to decelerate and journey into oneself. Let’s reflect and process all that happened during the spring & summer months of 2024. Continually riding the smooth wave of 94 BPM, this mix is a trip through some very hypnotic, deep and organic downtempo that genuinely affected me all throughout the year and especially recently. About the Journey:

Travesía Forestal - A deep and storytelling voyage through a wide range of tribal, organic and hypnotic downtempo music. Continuously staying at 93 bpm, this mix doesn't change by speed but through depth. Exploring these layers of downtempo is reflecting my current inner state in a way that cannot be described by words. It's this current phase that I find myself in these days. In life there can be many unexpected turbulences that pop up every once in a while - often they like to come in a high frequency within a relatively short time span and suddenly everything around you can start to feel very rocky and unstable. Especially in these days it is important to bundle your energy in order to keep navigating through it. It needs prioritisation of where to direct your energy into. This also means that you have to be willing to back out of things you have already planned in order to give your body and soul the necessary rest for recovery and reflection. Hang in there and see every situation for what it is. Eventually you'll see that things will calm down - silence and self-realisation will return to being the prevailing states. These phases of life come and go like seasons throughout the year, like waves in our beautiful oceans, like the ever repeating cycle of life itself. We just got to accept, that also the not so easy times are here to teach us something. Namasté.

Abendliches Knistern in der Jurte - Soundjourney @ Sweet & Sweat Jurtensaunarei, Berlin 15.12.24

Henri Rousseau’s The Equatorial Jungle (1909) represents one of the most ambitious and mature works of the self-taught French painter, encapsulating the distinctive visual language that has come to define his contribution to modern art. Created near the end of Rousseau’s life, the painting offers a striking vision of a dense, otherworldly rainforest rendered with a heightened sense of stylization, symbolic intent, and compositional control. Although Rousseau never visited a tropical region, his jungles—constructed entirely from imagination and secondary sources—exemplify his ability to synthesize disparate influences into a cohesive and psychologically resonant pictorial universe.

The composition is dominated by an overwhelming profusion of foliage, meticulously arranged to create a layered and immersive environment. Rousseau fills the canvas with a dense wall of vegetation: oversized palm fronds, creeping vines, and exaggerated leaf forms interweave in complex, rhythmic patterns. This tightly controlled repetition and flat, decorative surface contribute to the dreamlike quality of the work, where natural forms are stylized rather than observed. The use of vibrant greens, punctuated by occasional bursts of floral color or animal presence, creates a visual field that is at once lush, claustrophobic, and hypnotically ordered.

Populating this imaginary ecosystem are a variety of tropical animals—birds, snakes, monkeys, and other elusive creatures—that appear partly camouflaged and partly emblematic. These figures are rendered with a childlike clarity and simplicity that belies the sophistication of their placement within the composition. Rousseau’s fauna do not interact dynamically with their environment; rather, they occupy it with a kind of still, symbolic presence, lending the scene a sense of calm introspection rather than narrative drama. This static quality is further reinforced by Rousseau’s use of flat color fields and his deliberate avoidance of conventional perspective and modeling.

Despite its apparent naïveté, The Equatorial Jungle is underpinned by a deep conceptual and formal intelligence. Rousseau constructed his jungle scenes by studying plants in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, examining natural history books, and incorporating visual material from colonial exhibitions. Yet, rather than attempting naturalistic fidelity, he transformed these elements into a cohesive vision rooted in fantasy and the subconscious. The result is not a realistic depiction of a jungle but a psychological landscape—an imagined space of mystery, reverie, and primal stillness.

i am very delighted & grateful to provide a compilation of some powerful, deep & progressive downtempo music that resonated a lot with me lately.

while recording this mix, i felt that there have been quite some strong energies moving all around me. it’s like something big is shifting. and even though this shift is not of an easy-going kind, i can feel that it is moving us all closer towards the light. the brighter days are slowly taking over again. at the end of any dark period there is light again, like in a tunnel - the only way out is to go through.

et voilà, here we are - welcome to a new wonderful chapter. let yourself go and be guided through this deep sonic journey.

Hola Familia! I could have never imagined a more special debut like this en el país muy bonito de Guatemala! 🤍🇬🇹

Thank you Valeskiaga ( @l-eduardo-velasquez ) & the whole Mellow Crew for having invited me to share this musical story with everyone who was there! It was an honor to open the stage for @nikispins who absolutely smashed it afterwards. 🔥 

Having lived on and traveled with sailboats to come all the way here for the past seven months has left me no space and opportunities to play music for a bunch of dancing bees. Last night it was finally time again to connect with this energy. Playing, sweating, bouncing and feeling in a complete flow with all. Connecting with others through music cannot be put into words. Thank you for all the lovely moments to all my dancing beeees! 🐝

I am extremely happy & grateful to be here and am very much looking forward to what this upcoming time in Guatemala will bring into life.

Crispy Friday Bounce @ Mellow, El Paredón (Guatemala), 01.08.25

Wow wow wowww! Muchas gracias, familia del lago! 🤍 

I cannot describe in words how powerful and significant this event was to me. Having been part of the Gaia dancing family since my first week in Tzununá it was an absolute honor to step into the position of being the sonic alchemist for this wonderful weekly gathering on my last weekend here at the lake. 

Playing for an Ecstatic Dance is always something extra special and honestly an extra challenge as well. And here at Gaia the energy was so pure & real! Starting the set right with a super strong thunderstorm sweeping over us. Thank you everyone for taking it with joy and love and all the immediate helping to keep things dry - what a way to begin a transcendental journey like this.

And I did not come alone - I had the company of my beautiful, talented friends and musicians Quetzal and Xavier which joined me in turning this into a fusion of a dj set and a live performance. Together we spiced this set up playing with two handpans, a saxophone, a harmonica, a djembe and multiple rattles weaving ancestral healing sounds with electronic as well as acoustic music. 

The result was pure magic! Watching all of you dancing bees feeling into your bodies & moving in your most authentic forms of expression was touching my heart deeply.

From a vision to a dream to making it reality - Thank you so much dear Joshua, Luz, Flo and the rest of the Gaia Team for making this happen.

No puedo describir con palabras lo poderoso y significativo que fue este evento para mí. Habiendo formado parte de la familia de baile Gaia desde mi primera semana en Tzununá, fue un honor absoluto asumir el papel de alquimista sónico para esta maravillosa reunión semanal en mi último fin de semana aquí en el lago. 

Tocar para un Ecstatic Dance siempre es algo muy especial y, sinceramente, también un reto adicional. ¡Y aquí en Gaia la energía era tan pura y real! Comenzamos la sesión con una tormenta eléctrica muy fuerte que se abatió sobre nosotros. Gracias a todos por tomarlo con alegría y amor y por ayudar inmediatamente a mantener las cosas secas. ¡Qué manera de comenzar un viaje trascendental como este!

Y no vine solo: me acompañaron mis hermosos y talentosos amigos y músicos Quetzal y Xavier, que se unieron a mí para convertir esto en una fusión entre una sesión de DJ y una actuación en directo. Juntos le dimos vida a esta sesión tocando con dos handpans, un saxofón, una armónica, un djembé y múltiples sonajeros, entretejiendo sonidos curativos ancestrales con música electrónica y acústica. 

¡El resultado fue pura magia! Veros a todos vosotros, abejas danzantes, sintiendo vuestros cuerpos y moviéndoos en vuestras formas más auténticas de expresión, me conmovió el corazón.
