SNOOZE #1 - Cukier

This Honest Work episode features Cukier, the resident DJ and founder of Codeword at FOLD in East London. He's brought talented DJs like Fadi Mohem, Setoac Mass, Volvox, and Efdemin to his parties among others; so if you're a fan of this groovy/driving techno sound + are in the area, we'd recommend his vibe for sure.

Next week (March 15th) Codeword hosts Rødhåd, along with Beste Hira and of course a DJ set by the boss himself! To get you ready, here's a set recorded live in the old trailer here at THF :) Cheers.

Our man Cukier goes back to back with host John Crosby as they blend up various flavours of techno tracks; from dubby to deep, from classic to new, from colourful to percussive. A proper improvisational and heady b2b sesh!

Cukier is the resident and founder at Codeword, the underground techno event series in London and Berlin. Cukier’s sets fuse heady, hypnotic and driving techno with deep and emotive elements. DJing at FOLD since 2019, he recently closed at ELSE Berlin where Codeword launched its European debut featuring techno luminaries Efdemin and Kangding Ray. Cukier has also hosted and played alongside artists including Rødhåd, Fadi Mohem, JakoJako, Ignez, BLANKA and many more. A former resident on Threads Radio, he was recently a special guest on Tempelhof Radio’s ‘Honest Work’. In addition to his event series, Cukier is planning to expand Codeword’s musical imprint in H2 2024 and beyond. Stay locked for more.

Born in Greece with Italian and Austrian roots, DJ and producer @marinagerogedj has quickly become known for her ability to create a unique, captivating atmosphere. Her sets are a masterclass in building energy, weaving groovy, hypnotic, and driving techno with a focus on depth, texture, and sensuality.

Marina’s artistry extends beyond the decks, using original sampling, intricate soundscapes and intelligent track selection to connect with her audience both musically and emotionally. Her every set tells an intimate story, creating an immersive experience that lingers long after the music ends.
Marina has already left her mark across major cities such as London, Athens, Ibiza and Amsterdam, sharing the stage with techno heavyweights like Ben Klock, Slam, Denise Rabe and Ø [Phase]. Now based in Berlin, she holds a residency at iconic techno institution Tresor and served as a resident curator for "Tresor New Faces”.

Drawing inspiration from her passion for psychology, Marina often incorporates her own voice or thought-provoking samples into her music, off ering a deeper narrative that explores themes of human emotion. Marina’s commitment to vulnerable storytelling is also evident in her productions, which have been released on prestigious labels such as Planet Rhythm, Kneaded Pains and Suara.

Fueled by a relentless dedication to her craft, Marina George is a force behind the decks and strives to inspire positive change within the techno community.

Having dedicated her life to unearthing the long lost gems of the early 80s via her Minimal Wave imprint, as well as curating thrilling modern music for her sub-label Cititrax, Veronica Vasicka has made a name for herself calling the shots from behind the curtain. Today, she steps into the spotlight as the headline artist with her highly anticipated debut solo 12″ on Regis’ imprint, Downwards. ‘From Here’ was recorded in 2004, with no intent to be released. Framed by a larger, more intimate process for Veronica, who was then keeping a sonic diary of her daily adventures via a 4-track recorder and analog synths, it puts into perspective the personal evolution and singular nature of one of today’s most acclaimed DJs and selectors to frequent the stages.

Setting up an out and out anxiogenic, eerie industrial atmosphere from your darkest fantasies, Veronica’s original mix burns slowly, like a glowing candle in the cold night. Exposing a musical identity both sensuous and disenchanted, the track gets all the more dancy and carnal in the hands of Regis, who tweaks it into a smooth libertine late-nighter. Second to counter-seal ‘From Here’, former Nitzer Ebb and Depeche Mode collaborator Paul Kendall transforms it into a more riff-charged, busy sound design where textured membranes dangerously bleed into one another as distortions convulse recognisable shapes into an abstract tableau of machine whispers and altered fragrances. To top things off in regal manner, Robert Hampson – founder of the legendary band Loop and also Main – adds a propulsive, hi-NRG twist and delay-soaked dimension to the vibrant multiverse that makes for a variedly-nuanced debut 12″. A unique, shape-shifting object that suits Veronica Vasicka’s complex musical persona like a glove. And finally, the artwork is designed by Veronica herself, featuring two self-portraits she shot on 35mm film at 16 years of age.
