I want to create piece that tells a story, and something ambient-like to “capture” what I imagined and to me, this piece was about a boy who had recently lost his love one and when he was alone when the funeral ended, he was sittting alone in a corner, staring into space, and while thinking of the memories that he had shared wif his love one, he started to cry but unknowingly cried to sleep. Nevertheless in his sleep, he entered a dimension(this is where the piece comes in), which is in his dream, where he is alone, and the scenery was probably golden brownish sky wif a mixture of rusty and new fragmented metal pieces floating and scattered all around, occasionally some strange looking object, like an ”UFO" “zooming” pass. It juz felt like he was like in space. He alone was sitting at the edge of the plank tht was elevated as he watched the pieces that pass by him. For him,  the metal pieces actually contained memories he had wif his love one and the so-called ”UFOs" being those not so good memory like the bad times he had(represented the diff section in the piece). However because he cant hold a grudge to any of it, he decides not to dwell on those bad times and the piece reverts back to the original section where he continues seeing the metal pieces(nostalgic and good memories) pass by him. Looking back at all those times, he really misses his love one but he decides to let go of the memories in the end and accept everything as it is and treated it as a good thing because he is assured she will be in a better place, god is calling her home and she doesn't have to suffer anymore. I’m trying to capture the scenery and ambient of his dream and put it into a instrumental piece, that is why there are random sounds and different patches coming in and out at random times to show the different memories(metal pieces & so-called”UFO”) that pass by him at not timed pace. Henceforth this piece.

This piece does not contain any vocals but something simple, just the piano and some pads and patches. Instead of writing lyrics, I wanted to do an instrumental to express my thoughts and emotions about it. Something different about this piece is that usually if we listen to some ost/soundtrack from anime especially when they say its instrumental, its usually the piano carrying the emotions and song, and very little use of backing tracks. If its soundtracks, mostly does not have much usage of piano, and even if there is, the piano usually plays the same motifs and changes once in a while throughout the song, with the backing track that compliments the piece and not create sounds to allow to listeners to think what might be happening. For those space ambient music, you dont really hear the piano carrying the piece instead the patches/pads they use to carry the piece forward, but for me, i combined both ideas into one piece, with the piano setting the flow, the pads to create the atmosphere of like floating in space and the patches to depict that there is something happening in the entire piece. The piano that helps to set the flow and the pad&patches to set and enhance the mood of what the piano is playing. I do not want to force the listeners to listen to this song with the idea I had when creating this piece. Though I want my listeners to let their imaginations run wild and tell their own story on what they think what it is about, each of its own meaning. I also hope that with this piece, it makes them wonder what is going through the producers mind, what is happening when she decides to add the randomness of the synths/pads/patch when she created this piece. Nevertheless, I feel that sometimes instrumental without lyrics captures emotion quicker and henceforth the attention towards it.

#03_It's Time

SUMMARY
For my 4th Prow piece, I want to continue to create a piece that allows my listener to tell their own story. For me, the setting is in a country where the weather was pretty gloomy. The country have some vintage shops that sells vintage stuff along the busy roads(thats why u hear the road sound in the beginning of the piece) and there is this girl wondering along the road aimlessly(footsteps sound). However as she was wondering along, something in the vintage stall caught her attention and she stopped walking(the footstep sound stopped). With that, while she looked at it, the object suddenly “draw”/“suck” her into another dimension(like how u will see it in fantasy movies). In that dimension(In my piece I’m trying to create a ambient-cinematic, electric music kinda feel for this part of the story, like I imagined a film without music but just video of everything that is happening, and now I’m trying to insert the music into it, and that music is what I’m trying to do in this part where she is in that dimension), she found herself in a sunny place, somewhat like a beach, and there was no human being except for just her, the sand, scotching hot sun, the sea, a few birds and trees. As she was curious, she started walking in that dimension. In that dimension, she saw many memories, some pass by her like a flash but some are slowly passing by her. Some of the memories belong to her and some belongs to other people but no one knows why its in there. Some of them are happy memories but some are sad(its represented in the softer part of the piece) At the end, she found herself unable to move further in that dimension though she thought it was an endless one, and was suddenly snapped out of the dimension as she return to reality, hearing the sound of roads and cars again. 

I got this idea after watching some Kpop mv(like you know some mv have a plot to it before the actual Kpop song comes in). However I decided to go with a twist, instead of a song with lyrics afterwards, I decided to have a cinematic-like background music for films like usually in youtube videos they use those music when doing a travel vlog/scenery(which in my piece in this case it's not rlly cinematic anymore, cause usually when we say background music for those videos for scenery, it will be quite ambient, cinematic) Instead, I combined some electronic music to the ambient/cinematic, which makes it one of my differentiating factor. I want to do an this kind of music to express the certain music our ears will hear we were to watch a muted film, each to our own imagination. So throughout the piece, from the sounds of the road, footsteps to the change of section in the song and back to the sounds of road again, I want my listeners to wonder on their own and let their imaginations run wild to think what is possibly happening in this piece, each to its own meaning and create their own image n story to the music that they hear. I do not want to force the listeners to listen to this song with the idea I had when creating this piece, henceforth the attention towards it.

Summary
I wanted this song to be quite of a simple one but with some talking at some point in time in the back(but still audible) to bring out the authenticity, sincerity in a way that those talking that you hear are how the person is feeling and it helps to enhance the song. This song is about the late night thoughts or night talks with close friends about the life we live now like “what am i doing with my life”, “I’m so tired of everything”, "why is it that….”,  "why are others…" , whatever it may be. Pouring how i feel(feeling useless like there is not a point in anything), those small little thoughts, worries(so much to do but there is so little time..) and the things i do(like just sitting on the bed, stare into space, suddenly feeling very empty, and the world became a lonely place) whenever i feel life has become a toll on me, when I’m very stress and tired of everything into this song.
To be honest this song was written as i was penning down my worries, troubles about life and the stress i had for prow when there is no ideas coming into my brain, I felt like giving up. Once i was so overwhelmed by everything, i cried for no reason, i blamed myself for being so useless, stupid, i unknowingly compared myself to others which does not help me in any ways(like how are they able to score higher and come out with better ideas when they only start doing their prow the last minute, like literally a few hours before the dateline), and i just feel like whatever i do is in vain. Only when my mind was clear again, then i decided why not just turn it into a song. During then, i also found people who felt the same way as me, and realised I’m not the only one, which makes me want to do this song more as i know there will be people who will be able to relate to it. 

Differentiating Factor
So for this song, I wanted to make use of simplicity, using only the piano and vocals since its like a song that expresses someone who is feeling stress, feels tired of everything and feels useless. Like you know how when we are stress, sometimes it just gets so overwhelming that not only we eat a lot/don’t eat at all, we also don’t really want to do anything and feel very “nua", and the songs we listen to are usually those slow songs and not like rock songs(at least for most people i know). But now, I’m not only using piano, pads and vocals(frequently heard in songs that tried uses those instruments to express feeling stress and tired) What’s different about my song is the use of dialogs to further enhance the thoughts of tiredness and feeling of being stress, which i find it pretty interesting. I feel that gives the song more depth in a sense because it can relate to the lyrics.

Further Delivery
I even added reverse piano in the beginning of the song, but at some point it is not reversed before making it reverse again to show how like when we are tired, we tend to not think well and we tend to think more and deeper.
The conversations are recorded through my mobile phone mic so to give it a the song a different texture to the voice and the vocals, it makes it sound more “real” to emit the real live recording of conversations/dialog because of the noise along with it.

Summary:
For my 6th song, Im back with an instrumental again. I want to continue to create a piece that allows my listener to tell their own story, and let them wonder what is going on in the producers mind, especially for now there is a different section in this piece that will make them wonder more no what may be happening. But for me, this song is about a person’s dream. Like have you ever had just that one night where u can have so many dreams? Some are happy, some that makes you hopeful, nostalgic, while there are some that makes you sad, angry. Some are really just very scary, mysterious, and even some that does not make sense at all. Im trying to “capture” the scene of the dreams in the different mood (eerie, nostalgic feels etc…) and put it into a song piece. Mainly trying to portray those moods with mainly the piano, and the synths to enhance the mood in the particular part of the song. So this piece was about a girl who had a dream that was really nice, nostalgic and sweet, however half-way through the dream, it somehow became a nightmare(like you know how sometimes we dream of something nice but the next moment, we had a sudden change in dream, and it became like a nightmare). In this case, she had a nightmare where she entered a world where it gave her an eerie feel and she is always feeling on the edge(thats why the use of clashing notes and some augmented, majmin, diminished chords etc.. ), like anything might pop up anytime(also the use of trill to create that suspense, the contradicting “if something is going to come out of nowhere” feel). And because its a nightmare, sometimes I feel that nightmares at some point of time will be pretty aimless, like you do not know what is happening/what is going to happen(thus in the middle of the changed section, I attempted to make the song sound like you dunno what is happening anymore). Moving on just as the nightmare was continuing, she fell off the bed(the use of running notes and ends with a bunch of chords, where the notes in this chord clashes with one another). But because of her personality, the happy go lucky kind, she did not let it affect her and get back to sleep again(the use of staccato on the chords that repeated itself to create that “skippy” feel). She continue to dream again, however despite her trying to brush the dream off, sometimes she could still feel the creepiness of the previous dream when she dreams of a sweet one as it just keeps coming back to her(I used some sound that could be heard in the nightmare part of the song into this part, to show that sometimes she still thought of it). Since it was a pretty common thing for her, she gave up on trying so hard to stop the nightmare from coming back(as the last chord not the song screams to me “I give up….”). 

Something different about my song I would say is my delivery strategies as for mine, I largely rely on the piano to carry out most of the mood and meaning of the piece unlike some songs that rely largely on the synths for a theme of a dream. I feel that the piano alone can bring out most of the mood sometimes because of the usage of different chords can bring out different feels in them. Each chords have their different “colours”, which I find pretty interesting when i learnt about it. For example lets say, some augmented chords makes me feel on the edge, while some feels really dreamy to me. It all depends on how and when we used them. So the synths to me is to help enhance it a little more.

Summary
For me, this piece is about how when I am feeling calm, the times where i felt anxious and worried hits me. When i think about it, I realise that those feelings keep me from moving forward, like I’m being locked up, and I just want to break free from it. To not care about anything, To just be happy. How i went about delivering the front part(to portray the overthinking and worrying part) is making the first section a piece that causes us to reflect on our day, cause like u know sometimes when we listen to this genre of song, we can’t help but start to think about different kind of stuff that is going on in our life and then somehow we start to overthink...? Afterwards comes in a broken television sound. Cause for me there was once I was wondering what will happen if a real person is in there.. it will be trapped right? And i tried to put myself in that person’s shoe, if I were to be trapped in there with the worries I have now, I would want to break free from the television n keep the worries all trapped in there and escape as a happier version of myself, thus a broken television sound to show that I'm breaking free from the worries that limits me from moving forward, determined to leave my worries behind and be happy, to not care about anything. Thus leading to the next section which is more melodic kind of electronic music, to show the aftermath of putting everything all my troubles and worries down. It feels as if I am being stripped naked, empty, cause it was the worries and troubles that feels up my day most of the time, and it was for the first time I decide to not think about it. And with that, the song continues as i’m finding a better and happier version of myself, which is going to be a long road. As I start to pick myself up, the section changes to a slighly heavier electronic music to prove that determination I have to be happy and the feels of not wanting to care about anything anymore. But while searching and trying to be a happier person, I started to realise that being worry-free is not possible(thats why the section changed to only the piano at the end to portray I am coming honest with myself) and I try to accept myself for who I am, a person with lots of worry, a person who tends to overthink, but I should not let it define me and the way I do things, cause this is me.  

What's different about this piece I would say is putting 2 genres(LO-FI and a mix of different electronic music), which don’t usually happen in a piece thats is solely LO-FI n the use of different genre in music to "portray" the things I wanna say because I feel that different genres can give us a different feeling towards the same matter we are looking at.

This is my final year project (Part 4).

FYP_4

This year did not start off well, I started feeling feelings that I have not experience before, and it was called Anxiety. This song is about how I felt whenever I experience it on a full scale(in my opinion cause it was the worse I ever felt in my entire lifetime yet), when I let my worse thoughts took over me. 
I hope through this song, not only will it resonate with people, but also to let them to know that they are not alone in this unfamiliar "emotion".
