Dolphin Style

A folk-rocking version of a nursery rhyme recorded right at the beginning of our Covid-hatched, home-spinning duo. It was our first record as a duo and it got some radio airplay which was as good as it got back then. There are various interpretations of the nursery rhyme which we explore in our pandemic double album "WKCR?/ Covid's Metamorphoses". Cock Robin is variously said to be Coch Rhi Ben, the Celtic sun God who dies in the dark half of the year; Jesus Christ, who dies and is reborn and even the Enlightenment figure Sir Robert Walpole whose meteoric career as the first and longest serving British prime minister came to a dramatic end in 1742 about the time this very song became a popular ballad. In our narrative, Cock Robin is also the enlightened and libera Squire Robin Peacock of Cock Hall, the spirit of one nation Britain, murdered at the beginning of the story. Nancy the studio cat (pictured) makes one of her most dramatic and her most apt contribution in the play out.

"I'll fetch it in a minute, I'll carry the link."
"Who'll be chief mourner?" "I," said the Dove,
"I mourn for my love, I'll be chief mourner."
"Who'll carry the coffin?" "I," said the Kite,
"If it's not through the night, I'll carry the coffin."
"Who'll bear the pall? "We," said the Wren,
"Both the cock and the hen, we'll bear the pall."
"Who'll sing a psalm?" "I," said the Thrush,
"As she sat on a bush, I'll sing a psalm."
"Who'll toll the bell?" "I," said the bull,
"Because I can pull, I'll toll the bell."
All the birds of the air were a-sighing and a-sobbing,
When they heard of the death of poor Cock Robin.
