Milton Bradley - Poisoned By Sweet Things

Reload Black's unstoppable juggernaut rolls on with another weaponized release, this time from London-based Jason Fernandes, presenting his latest three-track offering, titled 'A Few Days Of Madness'. The title-track serves as the opener, with a rumbling bassline and obvious spoken word passages running throughout the affair, as haunting riffs and tasty stabs take center stage. 'Can't Sleep' is toned up just a bit and the focus shifts to the busy rhythm section and streamlined electronics, while accompanied by reverberating metallic chords. The EP closes with the even more esoteric 'Lying By Omission', where looped-out bleeps and dark, melodic overtones all come together to form a spooky vibe with the distressed synths barely being contained in the production confines. The dynamic Berlin duo, better known as The Reason Y, return to Second State with a brand new EP entitled 'Density'. After last years debut, the duo have been working tirelessly to deliver a massive three tracker and they have managed to do just that as well as locking in heavy hitter Nick Curly for a stellar remix to guarantee a monumental record. Opening things up is the title track 'Density' and it certainly delivers the trademark TRY sound with crisp, racing hi-hats and low rumbling bass. As signals of bold sirens resonate through fields of sonic indulgence, the duo commandeer a journey into cosmic spaces. Followed by 'Sunwaves' which is the duo's ballad to the Romanian festival they first played last summer.  Laced with grooving low end and sun drenched atmospherics, 'Sunwaves' is the aural illustration of exactly what you would expect from one of the world's finest festivals where the water meets the dance floor on an exotic Romanian beach. On the flip side, the duo take a step back and drop the heady down-tempo number 'Whisper' where percussive grooves fill the blank silent palette as washes of mischievous pads create the feeling of being lost deep in the jungle while a whispering voice guides the listener towards some vacant hope of finding a native estate. To wrap things up, we turn to the one and only Nick Curly for his twist on ‘Whisper’, and in true Curly fashion he delivers a bomb. Swirling tones are draped over an infectiously loopy groove as surges of white noise grow, constantly taking the levels of energy to new heights while the original vocal is brought to the front to ensure a trippy trek into the grandiose areas of late nights.

Why do we tell stories? 

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs. 

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human. 

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun.

With Rags To Riches, Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists across the world to bring these themes to life.

The compilation begins with Oliver Schories, a titan of the scene who regularly bestrides labels such as Suara, Stil vor Talent and his own SOSO. ‘Eno’ is an arp-led driving track overlaid with a hooky cut up vocal that perfectly sets us on our way.

Darin Epsilon (Renaissance, Sudbeat, Hope) brandishes his own thunderbolts with ‘Jenova’, an effortless and deep cut of musical techno that sparkles with hints of summer.

JOBE (Connaisseur, Selador) is up next with ‘Aurora’, exemplifying his both timeless and forward-thinking approach to production. A killer sub line takes hold over cosmic atmospheres.

The cornucopia of treats continues with the addition of newcomer Roundhead, a highly talented 22 year old Italian producer who delivers the massive ‘Durante il Viaggio’. Analogue synths are coupled with outstanding organic elements.

Einmusika and Chapter 24 artist Christopher Ivor’s dreamy and emotional ‘Back Home’ retains the organic and instrumental features, coupling them with his signature grooves - before label regular KatrinKa adds her own wistful, evocative contribution with ‘Fragments’.

Finally, Danny Oliveira makes his return to Chapter 24 in combination with his partner George Gomes with his new act, Shades of Light. ‘Sierra’ is a widescreen and ambitious piece: deep, dirty and beautiful music to rule the cosmos.

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories.

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away…
