Ethnomusicology is the study of music from the cultural and social aspects of the people who make it. It encompasses distinct theoretical and methodical approaches that emphasize cultural, social, material, cognitive, biological, and other dimensions or contexts of musical behavior, instead of only its isolated sound component.

The term Ethnomusicology is said to have been first coined by Jaap Kunst from the Greek words ἔθνος (ethnos, 'nation') and μουσική (mousike, 'music'), is often defined as the anthropology or ethnography of music, or as musical anthropology. 

During its early development from comparative musicology in the 1950's, Ethnomusicology was primarily oriented toward non-Western music, but for several decades has included the study of all and any musics of the world (including Western art music and popular music) from anthropological, sociological and intercultural perspectives. 

Stated broadly, Ethnomusicology may be described as a holistic investigation of music in its cultural contexts. Combining aspects of folklore, psychology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, comparative musicology, music theory, and history, Ethnomusicology has adopted perspectives from a multitude of disciplines.

Traveling all around the world to discover new sounds has led us to curate our first of many 'Ethnomusicology Experience' various artist compilations.

For Part-1, we have assembled an army of talented producers who have delivered some exceptionally breathtaking music. Meghalaya is a hilly state in northeastern India. The name means "the abode of clouds" in Sanskrit.

Meghalaya, along with the neighboring Indian states, have been of archeological interest. People have lived here since Neolithic era. Neolithic sites discovered so far are located in areas of high elevation such as in Khasi Hills, Garo Hills and neighboring states. Here neolithic style jhum or shifting cultivation is practiced even today.

"Following his debut single 'Reverie' that gathered amazing support by the likes of Ali Farahani, Kora, Niki Sadeki, Be Svensden, Maga, Amine K, BiG AL, Savvas, George X to name but a few, Sobhan returns to Ready Mix Records to deliver his 'Solouk EP' for our 210th release.
In his opening track, Solouk (which in the Farsi language means: The Journey of the Mystic), Sobhan invites the listener to walk into a spiritual voyage. By combining smooth Eastern string and brass melodies, evocative pads and synths, and a groovy bassline, Solouk excites a mystical journey throughout.
First remix comes courtesy of George X from Greece. He beautifully takes Solouk into a truly magical, deep, and moody territory by using Eastern vocals and chants, melodic Arps and epic string melodies.
For the second remix, Kaan Koray, comprised of production brothers Koray and Eray from Turkey, add their groovy touch to Solouk; creating a dance floor friendly yet deep and moody sound.
For the final remix, Beyhude from Turkey, creates a downtempo version of the track. By using cosmic pads, ambience and synth sounds, Beyhude’s version of Solouk walks the listener into a trance-like state.
Second original tune ‘Khalseh’ shows a more meditative side of Sobhan’s sound and it uses melodies influenced from Eastern cultures, smooth pads, piano, and synth sounds smooth."

I felt like giving my progressive melodic house tracks a spin after so long. Hope you enjoy this mini mix.

Progressive Reunion

Raised in a family with a multicultural background and diverse musical influences, Sobhan was exposed to different genres from an early age, ranging from Rock and Blues to Reggae, Spanish, French, Indian, classical and Persian music.

His interest in music and especially rhythm led him to play different traditional Persian and western beat instruments such as Daf (Tambourine) and drums. Later, he became particularly interested in electronic music which led him to pursue DJing.

Since migrating to Australia in 2011, Sobhan has been exploring his interest in electronic music and won one of the most prestigious DJ competitions in 2012, Habitat. Since then Sobhan has supported the likes of &ME, Budakid, Matthias Meyer, HNQO, Oxia, Just Her, Way Out West - to name a few. His exposure to both electronic music and traditional Persian music in his home-country and in Australia led him to start his own electronic music production. 

His sounds are influenced by his musical roots and upbringing, embracing the nomadic sounds from around the world and expressing them within a modern context, creating fusions which can transcend time and place. His music is also influenced by some of his favorite producers such as Armen Miran, Hraach, Kora, DJ Sabo, NU, who have a similar approach in embracing raw and primitive global nomadic sounds.

Through his work, he attempts to create musical journeys that connect the listener to sounds that tell a story, stories of our shared human experiences, through chants, songs and sounds that are new and yet familiar. Sounds that trigger raw emotions, of longing and of homecoming, connecting us to the core of being.

Sobhan’s passion for deep, mystical and fusion sounds has recently led him to kickstart a new musical night in Perth, Western Australia under the name ‘Solouk’. Solouk is a Farsi word which translates to ‘The journey of the mystic’. In Solouk, Sobhan and a number of like-minded friends and artists come together to bring an artistic experience delivered through audio/visual medium and introduce a musical journey around the world through their various global sounds. Solouk events have so far attracted much attention and support through the music loving community.
