Social Studies presents: Stories & Sounds

For the 95th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome @livwutang! Denver-raised, Seattle-honed, DJ livwutang stews together atmospheric soundscapes and bubbly instrumentation that could soundtrack a smoke-filled lounge, or a walk home under the cover of night.

After getting her start spinning on pirate radio, livwutang has been a regular curator and feature at local parties in her area. Her prolific grind and playful mixes earned her a spot as a resident of a room in one of Seattle's premier clubs.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: If you take yourself seriously as an artist then by definition you are a “serious artist.” Try not to let commerce depower art in your life. Music is about making art powerful in your own life. Focus on your private practice first, and then focus on making your music meaningful in the lives of others. That’s the natural way of things. Invest in the idea that your friends are special and talented and then create together. Don’t wait for others to acknowledge your work before you take yourself seriously.

For this second edition of Stories & Sounds, we caught up with a good friend, and someone who has been described by Ghostly International as “an integral voice in North America’s current wave of visionary music makers and DJs.” Although now based in Pittsburgh, he’s no stranger to Boston. Whether on the dance floor or joining us behind the DJ booth, Ali has been a part of the Social Studies community for almost a decade. We’re lucky to know @aliberger.

For our fourth edition of Stories & Sounds, the enigmatic @amadeezybeats. Amadeezy delivers an all-bass and nothing-basic mix that proves he's more than succeeded.

I had a lovely time joining DJ Voices & Beta Librae for their double residency this past November! Here's my set from the night. 

I love the big bass, but I also wanted to weave in some silliness and surprises. The whole night will always be a fond memory for me. Thanks to Kristin and Bailey for taking such good care of me.

Shannon is a dance floor professional. She builds dance floors; she’s started parties here and in China, where she lived for five years, even opened a club abroad. She shares the dance floor, using radio to open conversations about club culture. And she is a *really* good, dance floor–shaking DJ. Shannon lives for the funk, she dies for the funk. And she takes the funk very seriously.

"For "The Reformer Mix Vol. 1" we wanted to change it up a bit from our other mixes that are either straight forward, or live recorded in the club. We used two Technics 1200's and recorded a longer mix session, then edited everything down, mixed in live overdubs with turntables, added vocoder melodies, and also a proper amount of shout outs. The idea was to present a highly condensed mix that still has the raw live feeling we love from playing records in the club. With more than 30 tracks in about 55 min we're using some of our favourite cuts, moving through our biggest influences from House, Techno, and Electro, mixing all with a solid base in Hip-Hop." -LNS & DJ Sotofett

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: I recently spoke at a panel hosted at Abbey Road Studios and someone asked a question regarding building an audience/exposure as an artist. I truly believe surrounding yourself with like-minded people and/or creating in alignment with your values goes a long way. Giving value and purpose that is meaningful to you and your immediate audience will always go the distance.

Tammy’s sound, an exquisite amalgamation of the analog and digital, proves the boundlessness of music, and how she moves Detroit with unbelievable live sets and incredible records.
