ABOUT THE MIX

"When I sat down to do this mix it was December and at the end of very challenging year. Moving house/studio seemed to take up the whole year and proved to be quite an unsettling time.

I chose records that evening based on how I was feeling that night but with an overall reflective feeling of the year gone by, along with the anticipation of getting into the new place and the year ahead. Other than choosing the records to be played that night, it was not planned before hand and was very spontaneous. The only preconceived idea I had before embarking on this mix was to include a 'hidden' track at the end after a long period of atmosphere. It's an unreleased LOTI track pointing towards the future.”

Lord Of The Isles is a genuine rarity: a DJ, producer and musician with an uncanny knack of painting pictures in sound.
 
His music is vivid, effervescent and impressively visual, offering immersive soundscapes that transport listeners to imaginary worlds. In turn, these would-be electronic soundtracks are variously inspired by the sci-fi landscapes of Ralph McQuarrie he adored as a teenager, and his deep-rooted love of the outdoors. In particular, the Highlands and islands of his native Scotland, where he remains a regular visitor, are a constant source of inspiration.
 
Musically, you can hear these inspirations in Lord Of The Isles' music, which is never less than pleasingly tricky to pin down. His music sidesteps neat pigeonholing, variously touching on ambient, deep techno, analogue house, Italo, classic cinematic soundtracks and glistening Balearica. Each release – and there have been a few, for labels as diverse as Permanent Vacation, Mule Musiq, Ene, Phonica, Unthank, Shevchenko and his own Little Strong imprint – is markedly different from the last. There are moments of surging intensity, becalmed soundscapes, pulsating club tracks and heady, otherworldly grooves.
 
For all the variety, each release sounds distinctively like Lord Of The Isles, a product of his instinctive grasp of mood and melody and a unique production style honed through years spent in the studio.

He’s happiest when he’s making music, walking on the moors or contemplating the rippling waters of a quiet Highland loch. He recently traveled to the far north of Scotland to record tracks for the debut Lord Of The Isles album, which should surface in 2015.
