For the 71st installment in our Just For The Night series, selectors take you on their own journey through groove. Anything goes.

Next up, welcome Sneaker DJ 👋 

His musical upbringing started out in the Detroit and Chicago space, before further influences like obscure Italo, new wave and minimal synth gems. He's based out of his part-time-hometowns Berlin and Dresden, where he operates the TailOut mastering studios with long-time collaborator Jacob Korn. We were first introduced to him via his impeccable edits on Deep Cover #8. In his own words:

"The mix was recorded for the Needsome radio show and was aired only once on Radio Dreyeckland, Freiburg/Germany.

The session is showcasing curation and craftsmanship that was developed on the fly without sync buttons or a defined order. The selection follows a pattern of progressive music - the majority from the 90s, from Detroit and all Western Europe. A vivid mental image of what Sneaker would have envisioned as the retro trend for 2024 unlike all that generic, shallow trance and gabba.

I had and even to this day have the feeling that my fellows in the radio studio didn't realise what they were witnessing. Despite my usual uncommon selections from a background of 30 years of digging, I played the obvious - even classics (you'll be surprised). These are - nevertheless -  unknown to the unknown.

I blended these tunes with dirty friction - cause I dare to play 3 decks. Harmonic mixing - cause I am not deaf unlike most DJs. If you are a selector (LOL) jerking off on your rotary - let me tell you straight to your face: you are lacking skilltalentandinspiration to add MUSICALITY. Cause yours is no art ... cause it lacks artistry!"

Just For The Night #71 - Sneaker DJ

I’m beyond thrilled to share that I had the incredible honor of playing my first public vinyl set at the HOUSE LAB AFTERWORK party series, hosted by the iconic Warnow Valley in Rostock, Germany. The energy that filled the room that evening was nothing short of electric. From the very first groove to the final beat, I felt an extraordinary connection with everyone on the dancefloor—it was truly magical to see how the music I carefully selected for this special night resonated with all of you.
I want to thank each and every one of you who came to dance and celebrate! Your energy and vibe elevated the experience to a whole new level. It’s moments like these that remind me why I fell in love with DJing in the first place.
This night has left me even more inspired and eager to continue exploring the limitless possibilities of vinyl sets. I’m excited for what’s ahead and would love to bring this raw, authentic energy to other stages, clubs, and festivals.
That said, I do want to acknowledge the technical hiccups that occurred during the set, likely due to a misbehaving cartridge on one of the turntables. Vinyl is a beautiful but unpredictable art form, and I appreciate your patience and understanding as I navigated through those challenges.
Big thanks to Warnow Valley, Erik and Mario, for creating the perfect setting, and thank you to everyone who danced and made this debut unforgettable.

Despite having a discography that dates back to the last millennium, Pittsburgh’s Shawn Rudiman has never quite enjoyed the spotlight he deserves. His often analog electro and techno manages to be tough but not austere, and it has come under his own name as well as in the duo THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) on a range of boutique labels. He’s a prolific artist who this month looks back on his career with a two disc retrospective, Timespan on Pittsburgh Tracks, that offers largely brand new tracks which “go from base-level warehouse to more cerebral sophistication”. 

That versatility shows when he lays down one of his mesmeric live shows, as he has done for us in this exclusive new set. It’s just 45 minutes long but packs a lot in, from soul infused Detroit techno to elastic house. Passages of serenity are often followed by a heavily percussive wake-up call or serrated acid line, but never do things feel forced. From dark to light, visceral to beautiful, it has many different moods and is a great reminder of the talents of one of techno’s lesser known stars.
