From the concert 'Women Unite' which took place on the 11th of May 2013 at Alliance Francaise de Banjul in Gambia.

Musicians from Gambia, England, Nigeria, South Africa, Poland, Sweden and Germany worked together around the theme of 'Women', during a two week cultural and musical exchange workshop. 

Vocalists Neneh Jali Suso (Gambia), Sambo Suso (Gambia), Jalimanda Kuyateh (Gambia), Tata Sona Jobarteh (Gambia), Viviana Alvarez (Germany), Louisa Bass (England) and students from Kembuje Primary School were backed by the Sofanyama Band (Gambia); Sankung Jobarteh (guitar), Ismaila Marong (drums), Jali Bakary Konteh (kora), Dodan Nolaw  (djembe and konga), Sheriffo Kenuteh (Balafon and background vocals), Mousa Nying (base) and Matthew Pople (South Africa, vocals and guitar), Moses Blaak (Nigeria, keyboard), Marcin Rakowski (Poland, base) and Sabina Van Der Schaaf (Sweden, DJ).

From the diary of a volunteer at Sofanyama Kunda: 

"The Gambian experience is that of coming back to the roots. I was fortunate enough to to live in the village with locals with all its pros/cons of no electricity, running water etc. Helpfulness and genuinity of village people reminds me of how it must have been (and surely still is) in many places untouched by industrial revolution. Openness and unity are universal. One of the most memorable experiences was by the river outside the village where me and two friends went out for a swim. A group of about twenty children came to swim too and soon we were surrounded. They wanted to sing and play guitar for us. I handed over our guitar to one of the boys only to discover that the boy that grabbed it couldn't play, another boy took it and couldn't play either, but he banged it with a perfect rhythm. Another boy sung his own song while the rest clapped a beat for him. One of the boys, about ten-years old, told me afterwards about his books about eco­-agriculture and economics that he was reading, because he wanted to learn to improve the local area. When we were leaving a seven-year old approached me and said “We are one” putting open palm of his hand on his chest. I felt he had deep understanding of what he said. One that I have not reached until my late twenties . I left stunned. And hugely inspired. It’s my dream to go back there and build a band that will be a platform for creativity for kids like those and start a project which will cross boundaries of countries and cultures. I am privileged to have partly moved toward this vision by participating in an undertaking with Sofanyama Kunda that provides those very kids with an accessible recording facility that is continuously running."
