New York guitarist Carter Thornton has manipulated sound in mysterious underground corners for decades – his contributions to No Neck Blues Band satellites, doom/drone metal ensemble Gnaw (with Alan Dubin of Khanate), avant-pop group Pigeons, and the mostly-solo endeavor Zashiki-Warashi are sufficiently divergent for even the most atuned seeker. Releases under his given name are scant but very heavy; Ten Fingers for Forefathers remains one of the more adventurous solo guitar statements of the past decade.

His latest work, several years in the making, is conceived as a series called Mapping the Ghost. Thornton returned to his given name for this highly personal, though not expressly confessional music, which unfolds via a series of hints constructed by Thornton alone, using traditional instrumentation, found sounds, field recordings, F/X and more. Volume One tramples through a host of environments, from (fairly) straightforward string pieces to uncompromising collage fever dreams and various points in-between. Volume Two will be released early in 2016.

“Someone must have handed me a piece of flexible tubing from the hardware store and shown me that I could play it, the pitch rising and falling according to how hard I’d blow through it. It was around 1970. I tied a red kerchief to this horn and called it my molimo, after the instrument the Mbuti Pygmies play to wake up their mother, the forest. According to the anthropologist Colin Turnbull, the Pygmies of the Ituri Forest originally made their molimo by burying a special kind of branch in the ground for the ants to hollow out. As stores became part of their world, the Pygmies found that a drainpipe worked just as well. They claim that the molimo is the sound, not the object. ” – Simone Forti

Simone Forti – Al Di Là (SLT-004)

Saltern is excited to present Al Di Là, the first full-length collection of recordings by renowned dancer/choreographer, artist and writer Simone Forti. Forti (born 1935, Florence, Italy) has influenced generations of artists through her innovative approaches to dance and movement. Forti is noted for her extensive work with musicians, including Charlemagne Palestine, La Monte Young, Jon Gibson, Peter Van Riper, and Z’EV, among others. With Al Di Là, we hear Forti musically in her own right through a diverse collection of never-before-released pieces, ranging from the early ‘60s to mid-80s, that highlight Forti’s use of her voice, folk songs, handmade instruments, and physical space. The album, compiled by Forti with the assistance of Tashi Wada, includes a rare guest appearance by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela and features a 28-page color booklet of writings, drawings and photos by Forti. Al Di Là is a uniquely personal and intimate portrait of one of the truly visionary artists of our time. Printed at Stoughton Printing Company. Mastered by Stephan Mathieu.

Terry once played this composition for me at his parents’ house in Eagle Rock on piano, alone. Since there are no words with the melodic line, I suggested to Charles Curtis that since the cello is such a song-like instrument, perhaps he could play the vocal part and Michael Schumacher could play the piano part.” – La Monte Young

Saltern presents its fifth release, Charles Curtis: Performances & Recordings 1998-2018, the first comprehensive collection of recordings surveying the career of renowned, American cellist Charles Curtis. Selected by Curtis and Tashi Wada from recordings spanning the past two decades, the collection offers a broad, inclusive view of Curtis's activities across the diverse worlds of music he inhabits, containing rare, unreleased recordings, and never-before-released music by Terry Jennings, Richard Maxfield, Éliane Radigue, Alison Knowles, and Curtis. The wide-ranging scope of this release speaks not to a musical restlessness, but to a genuine spirit of inquiry, as these areas of activity for Curtis have existed concurrently in dialogue, not simply in succession, for decades. Over two hours of music by composers and artists with whom Curtis is closely associated including Éliane Radigue, Guillaume de Machaut, Tobias Hume, Silvestro di Ganassi, Terry Jennings, Morton Feldman, Anton Webern, Olivier Messiaen, Alison Knowles, Richard Maxfield, and Curtis himself. My proposed show would aim to shine a light on independent/underground sounds from the past and present & from all corners of the globe, hopefully something akin to the old Peter Jesperson radio show (I've heard tapes), or programming you may hear on NTS radio or WFMU. Genre representation will likely skew more towards western rock music, but the goal is to incorporate not only several permutations of that idiom, but other sounds like jazz, reggae, folk, electronic, and many other sub-genres within.
