Story of the track:

A track from 13 years ago!
This particular track has a lot of meaning for me. I wrote it back when I had just turned 24, right out of music school (Berklee) and very little in the way of prospects for a career in composing at that time.
I got the opportunity to score an amazing low budget independent feature film called Cafe and Tobacco, starring a young Enrique Murciano (right before he got famous for starring in Without a Trace.) The film was set in Miami and followed a Cuban American family, but the director Michael Justiz didn’t want a traditional Afro-Cuban score. The concept was to have a sweeping, evocative score that had hints of Cuban culture, which would better represent a family with Cuban roots that was, generation by generation, assimilating deeper into American culture.
I had to do the entire project - about 40 minutes of music, without much of a budget, a studio, or even a computer! I know what you’re probably thinking, computers weren’t around then - haha! But it wasn’t that long ago: 2003 - most of my fellow students had computers but I was too poor at the time. So I cheekily used my school’s computers to make midi mock-ups of the music, which I then sent to the director for notes and approval before we recorded live instruments.
To record the various instruments, I called on a lot of favors from fellow Berklee students, including, but not limited to: engineers, super talented guitarists, percussionists, vocalists, a flautist, a conductor and even an entire strings section.
Because I didn’t have a computer, I was walking around with a very precious hard drive containing all the music and files from each recording (and there were at least a dozen separate recording sessions!)
Anyway, this was the final piece of music in the film, finally allowing the main themes of the score to play in their entirety, summing up a life affirming message and giving the audience a lift as the credits began, following a very intense scene. Sadly, Cafe and Tobacco never made it beyond a few well-received film festival screenings (where it won awards).
A few months later I submitted this piece as my application for the BMI Pete Carpenter Fellowship, which I was fortunate enough to be picked for. It was an amazing opportunity to fly out to LA and learn from the TV composing legend Mike Post for a few months. I’ve lived in the LA area ever since.
The music is rough compared to the slickness of what I have to produce today for movie trailers, but I’m still really proud of it, all these years later. With my circumstances at the time, scoring Cafe and Tobacco was an epic undertaking.
I found it the other day in my iTunes and decided to spruce up the mix a little, and wanted to share it with you guys! Maybe you hear a little bit of the future trailer-ness in there somewhere :)
