Even though he lived in the Netherlands for a while, Japanese producer and sound sculpturer So Oishi first discovered SoHaSo on his return to Tokyo, where he now resides. The Lithospere EP is his impressive debut for the Utrecht-based label. 

https://soundcloud.com/sooishi's music has a unique soothing sensation while its psychedelic undertone resonates on various levels. The four tracks on this EP are simply phenomenal, whether you are into deep ambient soundscapes (Lithosphere, Rays), wonky break beats (BLOSC Figure One) or seeking a decisive Japanese answer to early Autechre-records (Nighthawk). 

While in The Hague, So Oishi studied algorithmic composition and sound synthesis at the Royal Conservatory. "I was doing geeky programming and developed my own software synthesizer and a composition program when I was there", he looks back on his Dutch years. He still uses both elements in his compositions from time to time. And it shows, because So Oishi has carved out his very own unique sound on the Lithospere EP.

"Niet Zonder Reden", Birdguy's debut album on Something Happening Somewhere, seems to revolve around unfinished business. The Utrecht-based artist evokes life events that have seemingly left him a little broken, a little lopsided, but with an eye for tender beauty. It's the portrait of a man in the progress of finding light at the end of a tunnel.

Songs flutter in and out of focus like passing thoughts on a long walk, seemingly cobbled together from fragments of melody and memory alike. "Ongeveer Daar" does not simply tell you about heartbreak, Birdguy's performance is drenched in it, and it hits you like a gut punch. Meanwhile, Birdguy's buzzing lofi beats keep the album moving along, preventing the listener from getting lost in the darkness. "Niet Zonder Reden" is bittersweet, earnest and keeps you on your toes throughout.

Deep, trippy and hypnotic. That pretty much sums up the new Nacreous-EP by Shoal on the Dutch imprint NOWHERE. The title refers to a certain glow or color that mother-of-pearl radiates. Shoal is the alter ego of Utrecht-resident Kenny Dean Kneefel. When you have a name that sounds like a famous stuntman, you are probably prepared to take more risks.

And indeed that's exactly what this producer from the lowlands does on Nacreous. Shoal's four track EP combines hallucinant grooves with delicate sound design. Like on Bygone Drums, where ominous distant sounds from a nearby factory creep between the shadows. The same can be said of the title track, a tribalistic tune with a delicate dark undertone.

Never Endings is more uplifting, with its dubbed out basslines and crispy hi-hats. Dubtechno that reminds us of both Monolake and Fluxion. Closing track Morning Float is indeed that, a trip in a blue tank filled with warm water, where you are comforted by beautiful strings and sounds of nature.
