SoHaSo Podcast Series

....and as with everything Toi Toi related, we like to expand our horizons and explore deeper all solid musical influences and here is one of mine, the strongest: techno & Detroit. You all know of my dear love and obsession for Techno. A child of Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, Surgeon and later on the minimal techno front with Richie Hawtin, Daniel Bell, the dub side with Maurizio as well as UK influences, and eventually landing on to Perlon via that.

With that said it comes as no surprise that I fell in love with the productions of Luke. Everything this guy made I would love, be it on releases on his own imprint DeepLabs or on Carl Craig's Planet E or say in his collaborations with the likes of Omar S. 

Leading the new generation of Detroit producers and djs, along with artists such as Kyle Hall he has helped shape and maintain the city's status as an epicentre of true, soulful techno. His analog 90’s minimal approach infused with dub Detroit sounds makes him such a gem, the sophisticated side of the golden 90s, classy and elegant -  this adoration for him and his music led us to host him in our series, it is with great honour we do so.

During our trip to the Netherlands in October, we had an opportunity to meet one of the rising stars from the Dutch underground electronic scene that we've been following for a few years now, Ashley Haak, aka Luna Ludmila. The talented DJ and producer from Utrecht stole our hearts with her warm and friendly attitude, vast music knowledge, and incredible DJ skills. 

After contributing a track to the 'Nowhere 02' compilation on SoHaSo and remixing Dwaalgast's 'Maan' track, both of which we had the pleasure premiering, Luna Ludmila released an outstanding debut solo EP on Amsterdam-based Statetly Records in June last year.
With many local and international gigs, already under her belt, including Loveland Festival, Breakfast Club, Shelter, and Paradigm, to name a few, and her upcoming debut at the infamous Awakenings festival Luna Ludmila is one the bright stars from the vibrating Dutch scene. 

Luna Ludmila's mix is deep and dubby, blurring the lines between house and techno with excellent track selection and smooth flow. It's the late-night, after-hour vibe in its finest form.

It goes something like this: Back in March last year, just as clubs were reopening, Askmelater (aka Toine) was invited to play Utrecht's infamous WAS. club night. But unfortunately, they caught covid and were unable to make the date (most of us can relate). Stuck at home, Toine channelled both their fever dreams and their frustration at missing out on a good gig in an excellent set of moody breaks and trippy electronica. Almost a year after reopening, this mix is a welcome reminder of what a joy it is to be back on the dancefloor. And with Askmelater at the helm, you know you're in for something special.

Philipp @priebe runs his label Stólar, out of what most claim to be the mecca of techno, Berlin. Born and raised in a small town in Saxony and musically educated in the city of Greifswald at the Baltic Sea, Philipp Priebe get his main inspiration from nature, just like the most famous son of the City - Caspar David Friedrich. Philipp has been steadily building a reputation as a talented producer and live act steadily exploring the depths of deepest dub techno and hazy deep house. Over the past few years, his material and the @stolarrecords imprint have moved from strength to strength, gathering a steady following from many leading figures in the world of raw, emotional deep house and techno. The past few years have seen Philipp unveil a series of EP’s on Stólar plus more for @grad_u dub techno-focused @greyscale-music-lt imprint and most recently a well-received long player for Tim Eder & Fossar’s Hamburg-based Feuilleton.

Her dubbed-out style and meticulous mixing shines through on this hour-long mix. It’s a thick weave of grooves, pads, and basslines that seems to move ever forward. To make these classic elements feel both fresh and familiar is quite an achievement. Thanks Ashley for taking us on this journey.

Her bio spans four countries in three different continents, and a family history tying her to even more diverse locales. A true globetrotting citizen of the world, she has taken in influences from a large variety of sources to inform her wide-ranging musical taste. It’s hardly a coincidence she has dropped anchor at the port of Rotterdam, a place which is defined by its diversity and by welcoming travelers from all over the world. 

A journey is also the best way to describe her addition to our podcast series. A truly eclectic mix of genres, moods and moments, we’re taking from energetic breaks and techno thumping, with hints of rave-synths, acid-basslines and plenty of percussion sprinkled in for good measure. And then, just as you think you’ve figured out what Beyun’s all about in this set, she mixes things up. We won’t spoil the ending, so you’ll just have to wait and hear what’s in store (or skip through, if you’re a party pooper).

For this edition of the podcast, these label mainstays have put together a scorching mix of deep rolling grooves and live synths. Having well earned their accolades as individual performers (Nuno dos Santos and Cosmic Force), they perfectly complement each other’s skillset, energy and creativity.
