Meet ARJ (IR) — a young DJ and producer born in Toronto with Iranian roots, whose sound is a seamless fusion of progressive and organic house, enriched with subtle Middle Eastern textures. Shaped by a childhood surrounded by both traditional Persian melodies and the global heartbeat of electronic music, ARJ’s artistry is a bridge between cultures and emotions.

Since diving deeper into production in 2018 and officially sharing his sound with the world in 2025, ARJ has quickly become a rising figure in Toronto’s underground scene. His sets are atmospheric journeys — melodic yet powerful, reflective yet driving — resonating with a growing community of passionate listeners. Inspired by icons like Hernán Cattáneo, Guy J, Sebastien Leger, John Cosani, and beyond, ARJ channels influences into a uniquely emotive and forward-looking sound.

Episode 022 captures not only his technical craft but also the spirit of a young artist transforming personal roots into universal resonance. A new name, but one that already feels destined for bigger stages.

This LP is the result: spacey grooves, organic high-tech analogue instruments, and a sound that’s firm but never harsh. Currently based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Alex first discovered his passion for sound design and rhythm in 2003, quickly immersing himself in the French House movement. His musical curiosity and evolving taste later carried him through the raw energy of Techno and Minimal between 2012 and 2018, before ultimately finding his home in the lush atmospheres of Progressive House and Melodic Techno.

Subtractive’s career is marked by a constant search for balance between precision and emotion. His sets are crafted not just for the dancefloor but as immersive journeys that reflect his wide-ranging influences and refined technical skill. Over the years, his music has resonated at clubs and festivals across North America and beyond — from Detroit and Chicago to Windsor and Tulum — building a reputation for deep, powerful, and hypnotic performances.

Along the way, Alex has shared stages with an eclectic mix of artists who define the global underground, including Tinlicker, Justin Martin, Kenneth Thomas, J Phlip, Kyle Watson, Emma Hewitt, Omar Labastida, and many more. Each collaboration and encounter has shaped his artistry, adding layers of depth to his sound and presence behind the decks.

With nearly twenty years of experience, Subtractive continues to push boundaries, blending melodic storytelling with driving energy. Episode 023 captures the essence of his vision — a sound that connects, evolves, and moves both body and mind.
