We Want You To Know

Black Girl Genius (BGGW) is a week-long public campaign that makes the celebration of Black girlhood visible and felt in our local community (Champaign-Urbana, IL) in collaboration with artist-scholars who are too invested in Black girls and theorizing Black girlhood.  The campaign consists of teach-ins, studio sessions, concerts, after-school Saving Our Lives Hear Our Truths (SOLHOT) sessions, kick-backs, and so much more!

Here is a little teaser mixtape of some of our favs to get y'all excited for the week of events, whether you're here with us or afar!

This track is presented by We Levitate Music, a black girl band, born out of SOLHOT, living our dreams. This mixed is curated by DJ B.E. and FM Lourdes.

In 2019, SOLHOT brought Black Girl Genius Week to Columbia, SC (March), Chicago, IL (June), and Champaign-Urbana, IL (October). Much like our other three instances of BGGW (2014 and twice in 2016), we held studio in various places and captured the sound of BGGW.

During the week of August 26-30th, 2019, SOLHOT had the honor and pleasure of returning to the South Suburbs of Chicago, home of visionary Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown. 

During this week students in the district engaged in SOLHOT rituals with We Levitate and worked in teams with artists such as visual artist Tiye Johnson, Brittany Watkins of Faultless Inspirations, Sheri Lewis of Melt Magazine, Dr. View, Beatty, Jacobi, and ThinkProgress of The Space Program from Oklahoma, Mikki Veal of OkSoBoom, Lamont Holden of LetterLBeats, emcee TheGr8Sky, singer Ausar Bradley, producer/engineer PlainRo, Jayda Imanlihen of Black Girl Film School, playwright and artist Kristiana Colon and rap duo, Mother Nature.

One of the many dope projects that was made during this week was the song, "Greatest" with Lil Nature whose group was lead by Mother Nature.

We offer a multimedia musical ritual experience about doing SOLHOT (saving our lives hear our truths), a collective practice of celebrating Black girlhood in all of its complexity. To name the ideas that matter most to us in SOLHOT: ghosts, generations, living, forgiveness, failure, grace, wisdom, movement, health, fun, love, freedom we creatively engage song, verse, poetry, and image to heal some past hurts and feel ourselves beautiful through each other’s voice, touch, rhythm, and heart beats. Each utterance of the discrete (& discontinuous) value and violence we resist through our work and those we are  also complicit in are animated through our performance to position all of us the other side of the wellness question, in order to remake SOLHOT useful to more people. This next level practice of SOLHOT sounds, beats, and bumps like afrofuturist black girl magic because it is both the art and science of black girl genius. We are unapologetically using digital wrongly to reimagine the collective, resound complex Black girlhood, remember relationships, reclaim the dirty work, and reverberate love for self, each other, and every kind of Black girl every where.
