Mmmh (Live @ Nostromo Festival) - The Lumbago Saga Episode 17

This Saturday's Select comes courtesy of Uruguay-born vinyl spinner Maximiliano Perez, aka Mape.

Mape began his musical career in hip-hop before moving to electronic music, and since then he has been mixing vinyl and doing the rounds in prestigious venues and clubs across Uruguay such as Emile, Living, El Ciclo, Montevideo Micro and Formato Montevideo. He also launched his own record label, AroAro.uy, which puts the spotlight on diverse sounds from various emerging local and international artists. His unwavering passion for vinyls propelled him to open his own record shop 22:22, which is currently located in Montevideo, where he’s based.

His sets are colourful and evocative, born from his own feelings and interpretations of various subgenres, crafting stories and generating conversations on every stage he takes over. He is all about chasing new sounds, recognized for delving deep into a little bit of everything from Goa and Bleep to techno and progressive house.

“I never focus on one genre in my sets, I really like the sub-genres within electronic music,” Mape tells SceneNoise. “And, I particularly like to tell a story in various stages, trying to communicate what runs inside me with tracks. There are sets that I make with a more linear approach, generating harmony and groove. Other times, I like to link different pieces from different producers that I find have an interesting sound, interweaving their works into something that’s very entertaining.”

His select set opens with a brooding ominous melody and a male voice speaking in Dutch as if caught in a vortex, before transitioning into a mixture of swerving synths, drone-like basslines and rhythmic acid, featuring famous talents like Paolo Macri, Lara Martinez, and Barik.

Analog Disease is an electronic music project by Carmelo Zocco (@kamerol_music) and Pasquale Ruggiero (@rabanne_music), two selectors who share a passion for the warmth and depth of ‘80s sounds

Although they’ve both been living in London for years, it was in January 2024 that they became housemates, strengthening their collaboration. This change allowed their creative ideas to blend naturally, inspired by the city’s music scene and the rich textures of vintage analog machines.

Drawing inspiration from electro, house, and techno, their sound is always evolving with a focus on experimentation and sound exploration. While they haven’t released any original music yet, their goal is to craft a unique sound that connects with their audience and, one day, to perform live using the classic analog gear they love.

HERO U.D.A. aka Hiroyoshi Udaka is not someone you can easily google, but he’s sure lived a life worth retelling. His story starts back in the late 80s when, inspired by the acid house emanating from the UK — during what was fondly christened the Second Summer of Love — he picked up DJing and made the move from Japan to London. Throughout the 90s he DJed at underground techno institutions like London’s The End, CLUB UK and Silver Fish, as well as at the infamous Tribal Gathering raves, periodically returning to Japan to support techno greats like Colin Dale, Mad Mike, Suburban Knight and D. Wynn on tour.
The tracks on this EP, previously unreleased except for one, were all recorded after Udaka moved back from London to Tokyo, between 2002 and 2005. Yet they sound strikingly modern, drawing on a rich range of sounds that have come back round again two decades later: broken beat, acid jazz, dub and breaks. Deceptively simple grooves are given depth by layers of textures and micro samples, for example the surface noise on ‘On The Way’ that glues together an otherwise sparse skeleton of dubby pads and body popping drums. ‘Mature Missile’, ‘So Good’ and ‘Night Driver’ employ raw broken beat templates with acid accents, whimsical melodies and vocal interjections for a playful mood. ‘Sin City’ takes a darker turn, off-key piano hits and plunging bass adding to the wonkiness. The EP closes with a wiggly vignette, ‘222AM’, reminiscent of early 00s contemporaries like Mouse On Mars. Now these hidden treasures from Udaka’s archive gain a new life on SAISEI.

SAISEI is a Japanese word which translates to ‘reproduction’ and ‘to play’ (as in playing records). Japanese culture is widely known for its traditional nature just as much as it is for being forward into the future and this label’s concept does justice to exactly that. Having started digging for records as early as 16 years old, Junki Inoue delved into productions from 1990s Japan to uncover these native gems. SAISEI’s core concept is to recapture and reintroduce unique pieces of Japanese electronic music onto vinyl, to an audience it never reached before as most of this music was only released in Japan.
