“Solo Piano Diary” is the debut release from Swedish pianist/composer Christian Lindquist, and what a beauty it is! Quiet, introspective, and deeply personal, the music is one man’s quest for self-discovery. In the spring of 2007, Lindquist started sitting at the piano before breakfast, playing “something,” and recording the results before heading off to work as the business developer for a global marine company. Most of the pieces are simply titled with the dates they were created, and many have been posted on Lindquist’s MySpace page as something of a musical “blog” or diary. He has never made any changes or edits to any of the music, which is astounding considering their cohesiveness, polish, and style. The twenty-five pieces are mostly short (1 1/2 - 3 1/2 minutes in length), but are perfect in their brevity, conveying all they need to say without a lot of frills or fanfare. Christian Lindquist is an artist whose music expresses almost as much with the spaces between the notes as the notes themselves. This is music to get lost in, hoping never to be found again!

There are no weak tracks on  “Solo Piano Diary,” but I do have some favorites. It begins with “Five,” a gently flowing piece that exudes calm and contentment. “2007-Nov-04” is on the melancholy side, letting emotion create the music spontaneously, telling its story honestly and without inhibition. As the title implies, “myJoy” is warm and blissfully happy - musical sunshine. “2007-Dec-16” is very classical in style, elegant and direct. “Butterfly” is my favorite piece on the CD. Delicate, graceful, and serene, it’s absolutely gorgeous! “mySpirit” goes deep within and finds a place of peace and solace. “2007-Sep-01” is darker and more exploratory, with a quiet melody and some very effective use of the deep bass notes on the piano. “2007-Sep-11” also has a quiet voice, but seems a bit more optimistic. “LongTimeNoSee” has a movie theme quality, reflective and a little jazz-tinged. “BeWhoYouAre” is another strong favorite. Deeply emotional and uplifting, it’s a gentle pep-talk from a close friend. “2008-Mar-24” has a wonderful flow and soothing quality. The last Diary entry was “2008-Jun-06,” kind of a musical parting hug.

With twenty-six tracks, it’s difficult to pick out favorites - I love ‘em all! Although each piece is distinctive and unique, the pace and tone of the music create all overall mood of quiet reflection. Some pieces are very melancholy and some are tranquil and contented, but all are extraordinary gems that gracefully flow from one to the next. There are very strong classical influences in Lindquist’s music as well as occasional jazz and new age elements, but this is music that flows directly from his heart to his fingers, seeking his own personal truth without fear or inhibition - art in its purest form. The absence of titles allows the listener to imagine what Lindquist was thinking or dreaming of when he created the music or to let the music spark the listener’s imagination without any hints of what specifically inspired the pieces. The dreamy quality of many of the pieces makes this an exceptionally relaxing collection as well as an incredibly beautiful one. I give it my highest recommendation. //Kathy Parsons

The series was created as a means for Lindquist to seek truth from his own heart as well as an outlet for self-expression, and these wonderful pieces are in their purest and most sincere form, unedited and in the moment. Strong classical influences can be heard as well as jazz, new age, and even a little gospel. The moods are consistent enough to provide a subtle backdrop for other quiet activities, but I highly recommend giving this album your full attention at least a few times, as it’s too beautiful to not savor in its entirety. I will reuse my own quote from the previous two Diary reviews and re-state that “This is music to get lost in, hoping never to be found again!” as it is just as fitting for this collection.

There are too many tracks to mention each one, but I have to say that there is no filler or fluff and all of the pieces are reflective and spare. The beginning piece, dated 11/10/12 and titled “Coming Back,” is a lovely intro, setting a quiet, peaceful tone for the album. “I Need to Sleep” has the feeling of late-night musings at the piano - minimal and soft-spoken. As would be expected from the title, “My Gospel” has a very hymn-like style which is mostly quiet with a few gospel phrases in the middle that present a pleasant surprise. “Be There” is subtle and very graceful with lots of open space, giving the music plenty of breathing room. “So Happy” conveys a deep sense of contentment rather than a giddy joy. “Always” expresses a tender passion that makes it a favorite. “Walk With Me” is warm and peaceful while “Farewell” is more conversational and bittersweet. “My Island” closes the album with a soft-spoken tribute to a special place.

If you are new to Christian Lindquist’s Solo Piano Diary series, this is a great place to start for soothing, relaxing piano music with substance. If you have the first two in the series, #3 is a perfect finish to the set. It is available from Amazon, iTunes, and CD Baby. Very highly recommended! //Kathy Parsons
