During a year like we've never seen before, the Sol Power Sound imprint reaches the proud milestone of its tenth release, Lomé Connections in Hi-Fi by the Sol Power All-Stars, because the music simply can't stop now.

To anchor the EP, the Sol Power All-Stars revisit some touchstones that have been featured on previous releases. Massama Dogo, of DC based band Elikeh, connects the capitol cities of Togo and the United States with 'Va Sé Da', much as he did on the Sol Power All-Stars’ Djidjo Vide EP from 2016. Elikeh guitarist Frank Martins (who got his start with legendary 1970s Nigerian psych rock bands) propels the slinky afro groove while the LA-based Jungle Fire lends its infamous horn section to give the hook its punch.

The 'Va Sé Dub' increases the slap factor as well as dancefloor tension, letting darker synths fill in the stripped down space as the Jungle Fire horns take center stage and stretch the jam all the way out.

The Jose Marquez mix of 'Djidjo Vide' was previously only seen in digital form in 2016. This sturdy and deep take was just waiting in the wings to serve as the hidden muscle in the B1 slot of a physical release.

'Lift It Up Again' is a treat for adventurous selectors that closes the project. It carries the same DNA of the other tunes but pushes the vibe further left with dubbed out Caribbean samples, tripped out synths, and broken drum patterns.

Make Me Wonder is a warm-weather jam that fills the B-side of the record. A seemingly endless funky groove, it was Tom’s secret weapon at his all-day beach parties in port. He tells us he can’t wait to play it at outdoor jams in his new home of Brooklyn, NY (and at Fire Island soirees this summer)!

Just in time for summer, Sol Power Sound is proud to present its 4th release, the Djidjo Vide EP, a 1-2 punch of Afro house by label heads, the Sol Power All-Stars. 

Djidjo Vide, the title track on the A-side, features DC (via Togo) Afrobeat band, Elikeh. It’s  a vibey slice of propulsive Afro house about finding joy in the face of hardship. Massama Dogo’s commanding vocals (sung in Mina) combined with the driving bass line, and aggressive horns (performed by DC’s Sticky Bear) make Djidjo Vide a summer sure shot for a roof-top jam, beachside dance floor, or nightclub near you.    

The B-side, Tell Me Why is darker and deeper, chock full of percussion, a chopped vocal sample, and in-your-face afrobeat horns (performed by Matt Rippetoe and Joe Herrera of DC’s the Harry Bells). It’s a late-night beatdown that will set things off proper in a dark room!

For its seventh offering, Sol Power Sound taps into the pulse of the French Antilles for Tambours de Martinique, a blistering EP of original and remixed versions of rare, drum-centric dance floor workouts. Licensed directly from the legendary Martiniquan label Hibiscus Records, the EP features cuts by Eugène Mona and Max Ransay, two of Martinique’s most storied musicians. With reworks by Spanish DJ and producer Kiko Navarro and the Sol Power All-Stars, this one will be in the record bags of discerning DJs all summer long.

The A side features ‘Lizo’ by Eugène Mona, an essential figure in the folkloric music of Martinique based on the bamboo flute, bèlè drums, and the island's specific variant of Antillean creole.  Lizo was originally released in 1990 on Mona’s Blanc Mangé Blan Manjé? LP and is anchored by frenetic percussion, a driving bassline, and house-evocative key stabs. Mona's flute kicks off the tune which then jumps right into a call-and response vocal barrage. In the lyrics, Mona warns a local political figure to watch his back because he's surrounded by an untrustworthy crew. Kiko Navarro’s remix takes an already dynamic cut to deep Afro-space with thumping drums and a bubbling synth-bass groove that will put dancers through their paces.

With its powerful combo of urgent brass and ensemble vocals, Max Ransay’s 1988 recording of the traditional Martiniquan folk song ‘Ti Kanno’ fills the B-side. 'Ti Kanno' was previously recorded by Ti Émile, Ransay and Mona’s legendary forebear. Full of surprises, Ransay's version is a sonic melting pot of hand percussion, horns, unexpected synth lines, and bass. The Sol Power All-Stars edit fills out the low-end thump and teases out the groove for maximum impact.

Since his now-classic Color Soul EP on Sol Power Sound back in 2015, Nenor has gone on to release a string of hugely successful EPs on Heist, Whiskey Disco, and on his own imprint, Nenorion Music.

With the Future Ancestor EP, Nenor revisits the African-inspired textures that made the Color Soul EP unforgettable, but ventures further into the subterranean reaches. On "Tike Ye Ya Kende", Nenor teams up with Congolese-born vocalist Natalie Wamba for a rousing dancefloor heat-rock, with pulsing marimbas and hazy synths.  

"Nova Man" is a straight-up banger with huge chugging bass, dubby vocal samples, and thrilling atmospherics.

"Ibe" dives head-first into the deep with tripped-out arpeggios, complex, layered percussion, and more of those gritty signature Nenor synths.

Tel Aviv-based producer Nenor (fka Obas Nenor) released one of his first solo EPs in 2015 with DC's Sol Power Sound. Four years later--after a run of successful drops on the likes of Heist, Whiskey Disco and his own Nenorion Music imprint-- he makes his return to the afrolatin-leaning label with Future Ancestor. The record sits nicely within the SPS vein; uptempo afro jams layered with smacking percussion. It has an almost meaner texture than his Color Sound EP from 2015.

The lead track, "Tike Ye Ya Kende" is a trademark Sol Power Sound cut; percussive, vocal and driving. Meanwhile, our premiere, "Nova Man" takes things into a higher gear. Beefy drums bang away and get laced with eerie pads and filtered vocals. Meanwhile, a big, chugging bassline gives the tune a tense, peak-time feel. The B-side continues the aesthetic, with heavy afro hitters driven by organic drums and instrumentation as well as hardware.

It's a nice reintroduction for a producer we haven't heard much solo work from in the calendar year. Nenor's strength is in his ability to blend samples, nasty percussion and hardware and instrumentation skills into an incredibly playable afro-inspired format. The Future Ancestor EP is out next week, so grab it for your summer outings.

The Sol Power All-Stars provide a rather large injection of afro/latin house music into the heart of a pulsing dance floor with this release on Soul Clap Records. 
4 tracks of vocal and dub versions aimed straight at peaks time dancers in full flow. We take a look at the first track on the EP. ‘Take Head’ is a cracking piece of dance floor magic which pretty much has everything you could wish for in its 7 minutes and 58 seconds. 
Out standing vocals provided by Denise Henderson, who has a similar flow to her vocals reminiscent of Michael Watford on Hard Times. Afro drum patterns clatter against one another with an Acid line that enjoyably nags at you through out the track. 
Just as you think the track can’t build anymore, an organ solo hits you from nowhere.  Harking back to many a solo heard in a CJ Mackintosh set from the mid 90’s lifting you spiritually.
On a  serious note, amongst all this enjoyment.. is a worthy political message against the wave of social injustice that is wide spread in America today. It’s a call to arms.
