The second EP from Soma’s 20th Birthday series is a landmark release. Soma’s 300th, comes from Silicone Soul, with an almighty set of remixes of their ‘Right On, Right On’ classic, including Nick Curly, Ramon Tapia, Fergie, Darren Emerson and M.A.N.D.Y.’s 2002 remix. Hatikvah have also submitted a beautifully deep rework of the Silicone Soul original, which will be an exclusive on the Soma 20 Anniversary box set, released in September.

Slam return to Soma with the slick, minimalistic and hypnotic Activate EP. With a focus firmly rooted on the dance floor, the duo explore deeper and more hypnotic regions on this new EP, with a varied selection of raw, driving yet stripped techno.

Title track Activate opens with deep, driving, pulsing rhythms and straight forward percussive elements, lead with hypnotic vocal loops. Quantum delves deeper as dubbed out reverb & delay saturates the tripped out acid bass sounds that flicker into existence as stripped yet effective drums create the intensity. Somnambulist continues the stripped back nature of the EP as subtle changes in FX give the track live whilst the swelling percussive elements drive the rhythms. Trsmit offers up a tougher yet still minimalistic approach to close out the EP. An intense and tension building atmosphere is created throughout the track as warping synths swell & filter against a backdrop of sparse yet effective percussion.

Classic rave vibes are the order of the day on Fenckler’s original track as the notorious sound of the 303 wreaks havoc, peaking and resonating intensely as straight up percussion and ominous pads provide the backbone to this dance floor burner. Concrete resident and D3MENTED label boss Francois X steps up with a very clever remix which utilises small elements from the acid line and pads to create and entirely new monster complete with it’s own pumped up drum workout.

Soma proudly present the first in an exciting series of releases to celebrate 25 years at the top of electronic music as we turn to some of our favourite modern artists to reinvent some of the best from the back catalogue and up first is Envoy’s timeless classic, Dark Manoeuvres. Originally released as part of the “Coalition EP’ in 1996 (which also featured the classic Seawall), Hope Grant’s instantly recognisable hit is still found in nearly every Techno DJs record box and has continually served as a beacon of Soma since it’s release Four new versions are served up here as Dax J, Norman Nodge, Obscure Shape & SHDW plus Tensal all deliver fine interpretations of this Soma classic.

Dax’s furious style is the opener as he uses the original chords as they were intended but all the time firing his concussive drum patterns directly to the dance floor. Ostgut Ton’s Norman Nodge turns in a delectable dub version in only the way he can by keeping Envoy’s original muted and delivering a subtle, introverted version. The duo of Obscure Shape & SHDW are next up and delivery one epic take on Dark Manoeuvres. The pair build the tension early, teasing the strings then unleashing an onslaught, adding their own beautifully led, string section before hammering home. PoleGroup’s Tensal closes out our first Soma 25 releases, twisting and cutting the hook to suits his means as thunderous beats work away behind this solid tool.

With much more on the horizon, Soma has their gaze fixed firmly on the future of Techno

Slam get to grips with Envoy’s 1996 classic, ‘Dark Manoeuvres’ in this latest EP release. Soma have been bringing some of Envoy’s classic releases up to date with Slam following Ricardo Villalobos in reinterpreting the earlier work, all of which leads to May’s release on Soma of new material by Envoy. 

Dark Manoeuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. The 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the Techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. 

Slam were very much involved in the progression of Techno at the same time as Envoy was creating tracks such as Dark Manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. 

The distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression. The hi-hat and kick drum interplay still drives the rhythm keeping that element as a prominent part of the track, setting a strong foundation that was integral to the original. Some of the more idiosyncratic elements of the original such as the aquatic overdubs, highlighting production, are reconstructed with use of modern technology to provide waves of highly imposing, building sound at crucial points in the track.

This is a great remix by Slam elevating the original track and elements within it to provide a new and totally engaging release which still expresses all the great qualities of the original. This will be a firm favourite with old and new fans of both Envoy and Slam.

To kick start the celebrations of a formidable ten years of their Darkroom Dubs imprint, Silicone Soul's Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie present the first of in a line of several very special releases and events scheduled in for early 2013. 'Darkroom Dubs Vol.3 - Compiled & Mixed by Silicone Soul' is a retrospective which charts some of the many highlights from the label over the course of the past few years, since the release of Darkroom Dubs Vol. 2 in April 2010.
First appearing on Scotland's seminal Soma label in 1998, DJ-production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, aka Silicone Soul, have occupied a special place in the over-crowded field of electronic dance music, mainly through the depth and quality of their recordings plus innate understanding of music's grand heritage and its constant development. They have released four critically acclaimed albums, gained residencies at some of Europe’s most celebrated clubs, scooped numerous DJ Mag nominations, stormed the UK charts and launched their own label, Darkroom Dubs in 2003.
The label's elevation above normal dance music concerns is personified by the fact that each release has carried Dracula author Bram Stoker's infamous words, "I am beginning to feel this nocturnal existence tell on me. It is destroying my nerve. I start at my own shadow and am full of all sorts of horrible imaginings...".A short video collage of still-startling silent movie surrealism has been produced to mark the tenth anniversary, further underlining the Darkroom Dubs ethos that the deep, the weird and the timelessly cool have been co-existing with organic ferocity over the last decade.
Emerging from the ethereal space echoes and cosmic reverb of compilation opener “One Thing (Ghost FX),” filters through a quote from Flight of the Phoenix,“I think a man only needs one thing in life and that’s someone to love, if you can’t give him that, give him something to hope for, if you can’t give him that, then just give him something to do.” The mix then glides off into the minimal sounds of Of Norway’s “Blot Ditt Eige Lam (Frisvold & Lindbaek Remix)” and beyond. Over the course of the mix we’re expertly navigated through a slew of tracks oozing with soothing, melodic deepness, carefully blending special cuts like Terje Saether’s “Scared” and Los Suruba’s dubbed out remix of AFFKT's “Fail Fast” into the understated build of Patlac’s retake of “The Woods” by Danza Macabra.The mix then rises into Alex Niggemann & Marc Poppcke’s “Keep It On” and Freska’s delicious “Honey From Within” before ending with two perfect examples of exactly what Silicone Soul, moreover the Darkroom Dubs imprint, does best: deep electronic music.
