I've always felt that radio and podcasts are for listening. If you want to hear me play club records, you can find me in one just about every weekend however this one is deep and incredibly sad… fitting for the times. I don’t actually listen to a lot of dance music at home. I have over 12k records, many of which are like this and a real reflection of interest.

With my Rhythm Control mix I wanted to explore a slightly different sound than what people know me for in clubs, and create something that sounds timeless. I've drawn inspiration from different places in time and different styles, and I saw this as a way for me to collect into one place all of those more eclectic influences that continue to inspire me. Most of all this is a mix of slow jams and indie rock to bring some heat in on those cold cold winter nights.

Freerotation Festival (a.k.a. the highlight of every year a.k.a. the four best dancefloors on the planet) was on top form this year – it's always a total joy to play and spend the weekend there and I'm really happy to share the recording of my set. I was playing second-to-last on Sunday night in Room 1, between XDB and Sebastian Mullaert, so I figured I'd leave out the drastic tempo shifts and just have A LOAD OF FUN keeping the party going instead, maybe coaxing out a couple of end-of-festival tears in the process.

If you were there then millions of thanks to you, there's no bunch of people I'd rather play to (or hang out with) and I've spent the last 3 days wishing I could go back. Hope you've managed to get through the last few days without almost weeping at the coffee machine. (I've had no such luck.)

Sybil Jason is a Haitian-American multi-disciplinary artist from New York. In 2006 she set up a blog called FARCED, which has survived through the years as an mp3 blog and home to her various mixes. She started a FARCED show on Berlin Community Radio in 2014, following some years presenting the Minimal Wave show on East Village Radio in Brooklyn. A move to Barcelona then saw her transfer the FARCED show to Dublab BCN. This summer she's been back in New York, playing a huge number of shows. Her style is hard to pin down but over the years it has encompassed 80s synth, coldwave and noise, but lately she's moved towards energetic strands of house and techno, all the while returning to the music of her Haitian heritage. She put together this mix for our Truancy Volume series and also answered a few questions about her long career, her musical approach and what 2017 has been like for her so far.

Originally from Bermuda, the now Bay Area-based producer Russell E.L Butler has spent the last eight years in Oakland decolonizing their music process through a method of improvisation and empathic intuition, all the while taking influence from the culture of the island and the black, queer diaspora. Their music and work, often steeped with themes and connotations of spirituality, healing and literature has been met to much acclaim, with their 'God Is Change' EP from three years ago being a perfect starting point for those only just being introduced to Russell's work. The EP, charted the story of Lauren Olamina, a queer, black woman who discovers her own religion, Earth Seed, during a dystopic period in the not too distant future. Since 2014, their music under their own name has found its way to other labels such as Opal Tapes, Jacktone, Black Opal and more recently CGI Records with their 'Dropping Out Of Life' EP, a record described as commitment to life after experiencing the harrowing events of the Ghost Ship fire from last year. We caught up with Russell to discuss their Bermuda influences, their current live set and the frustrations and contradictions of being a person of colour living in Oakland.
