Late Night Internet Loneliness

It's a nice coincidence that I discovered the disquiet juntos yesterday because I very recently made a perfectly appropriate recording for this challenge. At midnight on New Years Eve I was outside recording the fireworks and I left the mic running as walked back into the house where I was listening to disco music. So when I saw the brief I was like BAM.

I wanted to make it much more immersive.

At the moment I'm living in a big echoey steel tunnel in the middle of rural Mexico. They really like fireworks out here and everyone has dogs to guard their houses. And the dogs bark... a lot. The original clip didn't have as much dog or firework action as I would have liked so I mixed in a lot more and created a sense of space using panning, levels, effects, pitch, and dynamics. Lots of dynamics. I also saturated and drove the outside section a lot more to make it louder and more bangy. Also I like the walking through long grass sound.

Then I crossfade, during the bit where I'm walking through the door, to another track of the same recording but treated differently. It's much quieter at first and I added a bit more reverb to emphasise the metalness of my house. Then as the mic moves into the stereo field of the speakers (which is quite a distance from the door) you get more bass and less reverb. You get some nice stereo effects from the dual mics on my zoom changing their orientation to the speakers, which again gives a sense of being in a space I think.

Then I knock the mic with my hand. I tried compression, limiting, and eq to get rid of it but it didn't sound good so in the end I tried to disguise it as a firework.

Listening back over it I think I would have liked to emphasise that little click of the doorframe or whatever it is because it would make the narrative more obvious. Could even add some kind of door sound.

Outside Then Inside The Bunker disquiet0211-midnightinsideout.

This track is designed to play on an endless loop in an installation space.

I used all three of the field recordings from the brief.

I made a bunch of sounds in supercollider.

I also sampled iron man by black sabbath.
