Cinema Conversación

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013, Artspace SomoS presented a screening/lecture about cinema, post-colonialism and orality  by the Dominican filmmaker Nelson Carlo De Los Santos.

For this occasion, we asked curator Justin Ross to conduct an interview with Nelson Carlo.

It is a given that countries that have not had the possibility of historical representation, need to rely on orality. Part of the first generation since 45 years that can express its intellectuality freely, Nelson Carlo De Los Santos transforms orality into a very personal aesthetic.

Nelson Carlo has a Creative Writing major at the art school in Santo Domingo, shared with Parsons, and a major as a cinematographer and Video-artist from Universidad del Cine, Buenos aires, and Edinburgh College of Art.
Right now, he is pursuing his MFA at California Institute of the Arts. He has produced several short films and a feature film.
Nelson is a BAFTA winner for best experimental short film 2009, and has presented his work at Oberhausen Film Festival, IndieLisboa, Buenos Aires International Film Festival, Biennial de Sao Paolo, Copenhagen International film festival, among others in Latin America, USA and Europe.

SomoS Art House Berlin is proud to present an excerpt of Angela Flury‘s novel-in-progress "Berlin Cards & Crimes." Her text takes up themes such as translation, and the multilingual world we live in, representations of translation in literature, psychogeography and the loosely defined genre of the Berlin novel and literary notions of space, a meta-interpretation of the creative process itself, as well as a pastiche of spy fiction and crime fiction—themes which Angela Flury has previously interpreted and analyzed in academic contexts through published essays.

About the Artist:
  Angela Flury is a writer, scholar, speaker and educator interested in the history of the novel, genre fiction, world literature, translation studies, visual studies and cinematic narratives.
  She received her Ph.D. in comparative literature (with emphases on critical theory and gender studies) from the University of California, Davis, USA, and is currently an associate professor in the English department at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, USA.
  At SomoS 2016/17, Angela Flury stayed as part of SomoS Art House Visiting Researchers Program, devoting her time and energy to her creative writing and the preparation of her academic courses.
