"I began 'Plan The Escape' years ago, while experimenting with a small fragment of a recording of traditional Maasai drumming. DM Stith came into the studio early on, and a couple short vocal phrases from his performance float in and out of the piece (he's also the one singing the high falsetto at 3:40). The swelling, pseudo-orchestral sounds I made from from tiny bits of old recordings of Liszt and tremolo on tuned wine glasses. The bell-like instruments you hear are detuned gamelan, combined with up-tuned giant carillon samples. Listen to the strange quality of the background vocal on the verses (:42, 1:15, 1:51). I made those harmonies by "playing" them from the keyboard, triggering a recording of the lead part itself. One of the last things to come together on this was the melody and lyrics. "I think I wrote 'Enough of Our Machines' back in early 2010, so it's been with me for a while. In some ways this is my favorite track on Lanterns, probably because my emotional and analytical sides are both in full effect. Here's a bit about the geekery...

The tangled arpeggios are a combination of string bow attacks (with the notes cut off), synth, and octave-dropped banjo. The feeling is mechanical, but the de-tuned banjo gives everything a broken or unsettled quality; it's rhythmically offset from the others, and separates itself by way of an independent deceleration before each harmonic change. A trio of pizzicato strings occasionally do the same, cascading at various rates of ritardando. Eventually, the piano chords from the opening return atop the arpeggios in a weird, swung hemiola (two-against-three) pattern against the pulse. The unpredictable quality of the piece eventually peaks and crumbles and yields to a simpler instrumentation and a warmer harmonic environment. A repeated melodic gesture, a variant of the string melody heard earlier, tries and tries again at different pitch levels. 'I'm asking you to take… I'm asking you to take…'" - Ryan Lott

"'No Crimes' is one of maybe only a couple songs on Lanterns that I began writing before pausing everything to write and record my second album, We Are Rising (http://music.sonluxmusic.com/album/we-are-rising). The song grew out of a small piece of guided improvisation I recorded with my good friend, drummer Darren King. I captured the kit traditionally, using several microphones at once, but then I displaced select mic images in time, offsetting them in rhythmic durations. The song evolved and took many forms, and I even played it live a few times, years before Lanterns." - Ryan Lott

"Several years ago, I wrote the score for a ballet for National Dance Company of Wales, choreographed by Stephen Petronio. The song "Ransom" emerged from a section of that score. ("Lanterns Lit" also began as part of that ballet.) Originally, "Ransom" included a full choir, and a gratuitous 4-minute closing section. Fortunately, the wiser voices in me prevailed. The synth line that opens the song and appears throughout was the last major change to develop, saving the song's pop potential from the grip of esoteric, apocalyptic melodrama. Now it's one of my favorites, and we love to play it live." - Ryan Lott

Ransom

Reemerging in 2017 with four new tracks, Son Lux’s new EP 'Remedy' is the ferocious trio’s response to an ever-encroaching reality of social and political upheaval. Reflective but defiant, Ryan Lott, Ian Chang, and Rafiq Bhatia synthesize their signature unpredictable experimentation into an explosive examination of what it means to live, to create, and to resist in America today. These songs were born the week of the 2016 election, and they capture a band both mournful and refusing to accept the new normal. "How does it feel, to be your own deceiver," Lott whispers in our ears, just ahead of the steady approach of swarming, mechanized woodwinds and rising torrents of noise. "I watch you fall, hollow and depleted. A city razed/raised, to bury you beneath it.”

The EP's final statement is a plea, sung in unison with a crowd-sourced choir of more than 300 people. "Find your voice, in the sea of surging bodies and breath, to form a melody, to find a remedy."

In that spirit, Son Lux will donate all proceeds of the sales of 'Remedy' to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of American society.

From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and re-construct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring five recordings, including LPs Bones (2015) and Brighter Wounds (2018). A carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions.
