The song depicts a man and a woman in a complex relationship in which the woman plays a more assertive role and man remains in her shadow. The man and the woman are portrayed as king and queen.

{King:

"I want you so much but I dare not give in to my desires. If you come before me as Aphrodite, I may not be able to resist you at all. That's when I may submit to you."

"But I guess I'll be better off on my own. I'm a slave to your irresistible charm. I've lost my identity, fallen to your feet as a helpless masochist. In my dreams I have you. I see you as my fountain of life and youth. But I dare not let you have me again while I live."}

The man is a masochist, transfixed by her grandeur. He feels that she possesses his soul, his identity, and realizes that he doesn't belong to himself anymore. He's trying to snap out of her spell, but she continues to haunt him like some Goddess in his dreams and makes him feel like she's the source of his vitality. He hates that she can play him so easy, but the truth is that the gratification he seeks sexually lies in the pain and insult she inflicts him with. He swears again and again to not fall a prey to the witch's magic but he needs to put up with it just as well. He doesn't want himself to want her but wants it too. Like, when you're in a trap and you know that it may be amazing to be free but you also feel that the trap is keeping you safe and protected inside, unharmed by the dangers of the world outside.

The woman loves him. She loves him like a master loves her slave. She believes that she's isn't being hard on him. She's aware of her power over him and enjoys her supremacy and his impotence. It's an unnatural relationship, of course. As a woman and not as a slave master, she reasons that had he been more assertive in his role as king in this relationship, it would have been a balanced affair. It was his weakness that caused the wreck. However, the truth is that it's not possible for them to part, so they must be together. It's a relationship of a kind and they're both addicted to each other's love play and their own roles in it. 

It would go on forever. 

Crown Of Thorns

The song is the personification of a diary, belonging to a woman who unfailingly records in it all the good and bad events of her daily life. The diary calls itself the woman's ideal suitor and claims to know her better than the lovers she's had in the past. It has seen her mature from being a girl to becoming a woman and knows her entirely. She, in turn, as a committed lover, submits to it every day of her life. Its pages have yellowed over the years. Some have been torn from her writings immersed in anger. Her tears have smeared the ink on some. It asserts that it knows her better than she knows herself and tells her to go back in time and read through it again to read herself. She keeps it in a closet of glass on an elevated shelf where it sees her from and exults in the knowledge of how perfectly love hems them as one. Their love may be platonic but it's eternal, unlike that of her lovers who may think that they know her, but it's only to her skin that they do. They're unfamiliar with her exotic innermost self, the fathomless pleasures in discovering her thickest emotions, her fears and anxieties, her thoughts and so, her real perfect love.
