Hailing from Gent, Belgium, kaleidoscopic disco band Rheinzand is a collaborative project between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts and Mo Disko of renowned duo The Glimmers; accompanied live by Stéphane Misseghers (dEUS) on drums and Bruno Coussée (MannGold) on bass. Their new single 'Elefantasi' is taken from their upcoming second album 'Atlantis Atlantis', set for release on 1st of April 2022 by the Danish label Music For Dreams.

Originally written in Danish, in honor of Rheinzand's label, 'Elefantasi' also features French, Italian, English, Spanish and Dutch versions. The track was born as a tribute to 'Eisbär' by Grauzone, a track that always had an influence on the band because of its perfect balanced position between pop and underground. That thin line, the edge of pop music, is something Rheinzand flirts with on their second album 'Atlantis Atlantis'. 

The six languages all have a slightly different story, although the basic idea remains the same: a pink elephant doesn’t like his colour anymore because people only seem to know him when they're high. Fair-weather friends is all he seems to have. Yes, it’s a song about drugs and good times, but also about hangovers, loneliness, and a twist of identity crisis, all bundled in a string laden, feel good disco track.

Rheinzand's 2020 s/t debut album was awarded Piccadilly Records' (Manchester) number 1 album of the year and Phonica (London) gave them a well-deserved place in their top 50 of best albums of 2020. Tracks from the album such as ‘Blind’ were championed by DJ Harvey during his summer residency at Pikes Ibiza, and the band have had tracks on the first two volumes of his Mercury Rising compilations.

Album 'Atlantis Atlantis' is set for release on 1st April 2022.

Rheinzand - Elefantasi (French Version) - s0540

"El Menique" is the next single from the forthcoming album "Salir De Casa" coming out April 29, 2022. Didje Doo recalls, "This is the first song coming out from my computer back in 2019, when I started producing music again. I found that Spanish guitar sample and built the groove all around it, then Marco Bacci blew the magic from his trumpet."

People often ask why we started Soul Clap Records and I usually answer: “because we were receiving tons of unique demos by creative artists that we had to start a label.” 11 years later and that flowing faucet of incoming music is still the driving force behind the label. Sure, there is the Funk, House, Disco, and multi-cultural influences in all of the music that we release, but it’s always the artists themselves who guide us. I will never forget the feeling of excitement when Midnight Magic (the ultimate contemporary disco band) reached out with demos for the label, a collaboration that led to incredible releases, but also a deep connection with their community of New York musicians and producers. I still get that feeling whenever an artist that I respect, or new artist brings us something fresh. It's a feeling of excitement to release the music, but more importantly, it's excitement for the endless possibilities created by building relationships with inspiring artists.
 
Over the years this ecosystem has also fed a mission to grow and support a local and global musical family. From the Crew Love collective that combined the vision of Soul Clap Records and Wolf + Lamb, to the Dancing On The Charles compilations that shined a light on our hometown of Boston, the Italo Funk series that built a bridge with our community in Italy, and the Soul Clap Records Revue Tour, which showcased a moment when we had our deepest roots in New York City… our family continues to grow.

Pete Josef is an artist who uses his soulful eloquence not just to entertain, but to open up conversations about his own social consciousness. He has an inherent need to create, build, share and protect as well as educate himself about issues regarding the environment, society, politics, race and gender. All of these have permeated into his musical output in recent years, but on the new single, entitled Sunny Side Up, it’s the often not talked about topic of depression that comes to the fore.

Despite the bleak subject matter, it’s actually a song about the importance of having people around you to support you when you’re not feeling at your best. Pete admits to suffering from anxiety for much of his life, and cherishes having his family present when he feels unable to step up as a partner or parent; when he experiences that ‘hazy funk’ in the day-to-day. In many ways it’s a love song, or at least one of appreciation for the people who carry you through those moments in your life.

“Took a little while and it might take longer, god only knows.. But darling I try. I’m invested all ways. I just hit bumps in the road that I cannot evade.”

Like much of Pete’s new material, the song has a retro and somewhat South American feel. For the first time in a long while, Pete chose to perform all the instrumental parts on this track himself.

A 1960s Harmony Sovereign (the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ guitar!) provides the core, whilst minimal drums (recorded with one single mic in Pete’s Orchard Cabin) and Hofner vintage bass provide a groove reminiscent of stripped back 1970s Al Green productions. The result is something delicate and spontaneous – perfectly reflecting the shaky ground felt in the moment of conception. The track ebbs and flows between some surprising harmonic twists, later on bringing the Hammond organ to the fore and swelling to a dramatic climax, permeated by backing vocal arrangements and glimmering electric guitar.

Sunny Side Up is taken from Pete Josef’s forthcoming third album, to be released in 2024, recorded in his self-built and self-sustainable studio cabin in his garden. The exchange between studio and live has become a unifying force since the resurrection of his live quartet in 2022. This year will bring choice live shows, featuring the mercurial Eli Jitsuto from Bristol based outfit Snazzback on guitar and longtime collaborators Jihad Darwish on bass and Miguel Andrews on drums.
