Final 15 - A Ghostly 15 Playlist Curated by Michael Cina

"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.

Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.

When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.

So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.

Kelpe's hard to place. A natural son and heir to Generation Warp and the fathers of Krautrock, he's much like scene-savants Prefuse 73 and Dimlite: enormously respected, yet a stalwart of the fringes. His reputation weaves over a decade, won variously across the more amorphous side of the soundworld (oddball ambient, hardware experiments and sample-heavy beat-craft) but recently, it seems he's firming things up some.

Kelpe returns to puff up his still-young Drut imprint with a second full-length: 'The Curved Line'. It's a record transfixed on tonality and texture – Moogs, Korgs and pocket pianos are all in heavy supply here. The mood is forward, approaching more urgent, dancefloor-ready club grub. Our pick of the bunch is 'Valerian', a track that's all sun-swollen chords, droning synths and quietly frantic percussion. It's bigger and bolder, but all said and done – it's definitive Kelpe.

Interpreting The Future

Bedrock are proud to welcome Martin Eyerer, Mihai Popoviciu and Markus Homm to the label with their excellent double-header ‘Get Down / Ok Cool’. 

With all three artists working with Martin’s mangement agency, its a suprise to discover that our new brace of tracks are the first from a debut and impromptu studio session. “We stepped into the studio after a gig together in Markus’ home town” says Martin. “Right from the start it was an easy and flowing session, bouncing ideas off each other.”

Having built the bones of both, the tracks were then bounced between the trio to completion. Renowned for their organic grooves and perky percussive skills, Mihai and Markus gelled perfectly with Martin’s peaktime proficiency to deliver two bruising Bedrock hits. 

Less is most definitely more on lead track ‘Get Down’. A brooding bassline, spritely but sparse synth melody and spoken ‘Get Down’ vocal work together, with a sprinkling of shimmering cymbals, to create a dark yet warm atmosphere. Dim the lights, launch the strobe, find a speaker and Get Down.  On the flip ‘Ok Cool’ lets us know that everything’s gonna be alright by wrapping us tightly within its buzzing bassline and drifting synths. 

A fine Bedrock debut from our band of musical muskateers and we can’t wait to have them back.

A transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self. Our next excursion brings us to the idea of ‘Nirvana’. Self described as psychedelic techno, Franz Alice Stern leads the release with a trance-like, meditative track. The powerful bass-drum maintains energy, while contrasting pads and arpeggios add a reflective mood. 

Miss Melera makes her Polymath debut with a deep and melancholic trip. With important releases on Chapter 24 Records, and Berlin’s Traum Schallplatten, we felt Nirvana was a fitting theme for the artist. As uplifting as it is dark, the track builds momentum through an infectious groove. A break makes space for new musical ideas, until a final climax ends in a melodic release. 

Marseille duo, Fathers, take a different approach. Organic instruments feature in this compelling piece, led by bass guitar. Gentle melodies flitter in and out of the ear adding to the refreshing mood.

Franz Alice Stern - Nirvana [Polymath] Exclusive Premiere

Enigmatic Berlin­based producer Algorythm provides the debut release on the new vinyl imprint Neptune Records.

Initiating the package, stuttering percussion and echoing effects form the deep and mesmerising ‘Santos Express’. Syncopated rhythms and thudding bass hits then make up ‘LFO’ as twinkling melodies work their magic, before ‘Bird Cage’ introduces soaring chords and tranquil notes. Tying things together, thudding kicks and snappy snares drive ‘Omar’s Deli’ forward as various layers of serene synths and pads are blended together.
