Mr. Jim would walk in to our hardware store
He sold us paint and stuff when we needed more
A dirty joke for dad, no matter the day
“Not for your ears” is what he’d say

He was big like Mr. French and chewed cigars
Left the stubs lying around, so freakin’ bizarre
I’d find them with the rakes, tees, and nails
Grab ‘em all up and drop ‘em in a pail

	“Sport”
	“Good work you’re doing today”
	“Not much of it, but what you do is good”
	“Good work, sport”

Our families hung out with a few other friends
Women would yammer, so did the men
Cookouts in summer, big picnic spreads
No matter what, Mr. Jim often said 

	“Sport”
	“Good work you’re doing today”
	“Not much of it, but what you do is good”
	“Good work, sport”

 		Can’t say I warmed up to him
		Back in the 60s we were passe
		Kids were kids and we got in the way
