The song was written by Drake along with British producer and songwriter Nana Rogues and has additional vocals from Zoë Kravitz. "Passionfruit" was released on March 28, 2017 as the second single released from More Life after "Fake Love". It has been covered both by Benny Sings and Yaeji.

"Passionfruit" has been characterized as dancehall, R&B and pop. It is performed in the key of G♯ minor in common time with a tempo of 112 beats per minute. Drake's vocals span from F♯2 to G♯3.
