Rob says:- From the 2007 album Ned, Che and a Captive Audience Sharks Tooth began as one of Toms mighty grunge riffs and with a fabulous drum track from Matt Hirst and some great lead from Rick McCullagh is one of the albums great moments. Its a tribute to HGWells 20,000 leagues under the sea with a little Samuel Taylor Colderidges Rime of the Ancient Mariner thrown in for good measure -  Keep you head above water! 

Shark's Tooth

VICTA (Scott Myles-Guitar, Mark Rath-Bass, Kendall Banfield-Drums and Vocals) recorded this song "More than a Fantasy" in Marrickville with the Songwriterspie Mobile unit earlier this year. The song is written by Kendall and although VICTA is usually a 3-piece, Songwriterspie couldn't resist pulling the trombone out and adding some horn parts - enjoy MTAF - it's classic VICTA !!

Rob says:- A carillon is a musical instrument (usually housed in the bell towers of church towers, belfries, or in municipal buildings) consisting of at least 23 cast bronze cup-shaped bells which are played one after the other (to play a melody) or sounded together (to play a chord) - well that's the definition, however to see the real thing there is one in the middle of Lake Burley Griffin in our nation's capital. This song is about how a short random conversation can sometime change your life and how some words just ring like a bell in you head forever and then how sometimes you can just forget you even had the conversation in the first place. Great drums from Matt Hirst and a tasteful lead guitar section from Rick McCullagh.

The Waterbirds Acoustic

You can actually play a game of Musical Chairs with all the stops and starts in this 'Zappa-esque' instrumental piece. Created from the drums of Matthew Hirst the instruments weave around the Corvette Red Electric Mandolin of Multi-Instrumentalist, Audio Engineer, Composer, Arranger and Audio Archivist Tony Hunter who is based in Canberra ACT. Musical Chairs (feat. Matthew Hirst and Tony Hunter)

A re-mix of my only production single for 2015. Here's how the track came together:
In mid 2015 I had the pleasure of hosting a series of recording sessions for this original composition - my tribute to Jazz legend Dave Brubeck - 'Brubeck's Asteroid'.
Sax virtuoso Chris (Chop) Woodforde has contributed one of his signature sax solos to the piece, channeling Dave Brubeck's sax player, Paul Desmond. This was hot on the heels of another fabulous recording session just before Easter with Songwriter and VICTA drummer Kendall Banfield who lifts the piece into orbit with his very Brubeck-esque drum track.
Dave often used unconventional time signatures and so and like the Brubeck radio hit Take 5, we start with a 5/4 pop tempo which slides into interstellar space in the second half, with Chop and Kendall weaving their blend of Sax and Drum magic, eventually landing the piece at the edge of the galaxy, on Brubeck's Asteroid - after five minutes in space (that's 3 minutes of earth time).
About the lyric:
Dave Brubeck was the straightest of all the jazz composers however if I was going to name a celestial object after him it would be a supernova, not the cold dark main belt asteroid 5079 Brubeck that bears his name. Dave was one of the few composers that could get a radio hit from a piece in a time signature other than 4/4 - the only other person that springs to mind is Burt Bacharach - take a listen to Promises, Promises some time.We miss Brubeck and we often wonder if he's just away on a trip to his Asteroid. This song asks the question - is Dave still out there?

Watch the People (feat. Rick McCullagh -Lead Guitar)

This is the Funk Edition of a song we initially released in early 2016. The song is based on the true story of the rise and demise of Jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan at the hand of his wife Helen who shot him dead in front of the audience at Slugs Saloon in New York in 1972. The music revolves around a guitar riff that Tom Hubble came up with one night here in the Songwriters Pie Studios. I added the Lyric, Matthew Hirst delivered a driving back-beat and the part of Helen Morgan is soulfully sung by Paula Punch. Daniel Brini channels Lee Morgan with a sizzling trumpet part.Paula and Matt added the backup vocals and many thanks to Matt for the advice on continuity of the story line. A note on the lyric: I came across this story while doing some background reading on the Jazz giants of the be-bop era in the 50s and 60s.Lee Morgan was a talented trumpet player and composer and also a heroin addict. Jazz groupie Helen Moore helped Morgan get off the gear and put his career back on track and he went on to have some commercial success, his best known work being The Sidewinder (Blue Note Records- 1963). Eventually as the money rolled in Lee's old drug habit returned and he started in a downward spiral. Helen Moore, now his wife, was pushed to breaking point and one night she walked into Slugs Saloon in Manhattan's East Village and Shot Lee Morgan dead in front of the audience.I like to think Helen did this more out of love than in anger - a kind of anti-cupid, hence the references to the arrow. I felt the story was very dramatic and exposed the dark side of the Jazz scene in those days, many of the big names had serious addiction issues including Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Charlie Parker. Love Shot! Funk Edition! (The Ballad of Lee Morgan '38-'72)

This is a re-mix / re-issue of a song we recorded earlier this year. The track features Matthew Hirst on drums and backup vocals alongside the fabulous Paula Punch who takes the lead in the chorus.
Rob wrote the song and plays Bass, trombone, Guitars and other instrumentation on the track.  Music is the window of the soul - enjoy the Should Edition! Cheers Rob.
