Witches were evil beings who had a pact with the devil: he provided them with health and other earthly powers in exchange for their services and their own souls. This pact implied a collective cult (akelarre) around a bonfire where they danced and performed impure and lustful acts.

It is said that at night they flew on their magic brooms and landed on the rooftops, then they entered the houses through the chimneys, stole the newborns, killed them and removed their organs and fat to make ointments and magic potions.

Because of these rumors or superstitious beliefs of the peasantry, many women burned to death, were harassed and subjected to all kinds of torment unfairly by the Holy Inquisition, which accused them of witchcraft, extracting confessions with torture and sentenced to death those who dared to practice the magical arts.
