It seems that while Robotnik wreaked havok on the city of Starlight Zone to expand his industrialization in robot manufacturing, present Robotnik sent Scourge to collect the chaos emeralds. Sonic could be left powerless facing a Super-Scourge. Shadow later found out about this future and followed the hedgehogs through a ripple in time using the Phantom Ruby. Knowing this, Shadow embarked on a single mission in the future; To kill Scourge and take the Chaos Emeralds before Scourge or Sonic can obtain them. This however, also conflicted with Sonic's plans. Being good-willed, He has and never had any reason to kill anyone, even the most twisted of villains. But the important reason is because Scourge holds important information on where Past Robotnik is hiding so that this timeline can be undone.
