I think this track is a failure, maybe not to the assignment, but to my expectations. A random word  generator gave mit the word „arise“, which I loved. My idea was to get the relaxed mood across of getting up on a lazy Saturday, waking up slowly, getting out of bed and getting started with the day. 

The track starts with a dreamy shortwave recording rising in pitch and drenched in reverb, then adds an organ at a slow pace. After a break, things start to get moving, more lines are introduced, finally the drums kick in… but as the track might be something I’d listen to on a Saturday morning, I couldn’t translate the music in my head. It’s just too flat. Still, fun was had ;-)

Disquiet Junto Project 0602: Choice Words 
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that strives to express a specific word.

Step 1: Choose a word — either a favorite word, or one at random from a dictionary, a book your reading, or any such source.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music that expresses that word as best you can. Perhaps it communicates an underlying concept, or follows the shape of the word when spoken, or utilizes it as an extremely short lyric. Come up with your own approach, which might be determined by the word, rather than imposed on the word.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0602” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0602” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

Arise [disquiet0602]

An experiment in genres cross-over(Ambient, Dub, Shoegaze, Post-Rock, Trip-hop?) reaching outside the realm of my usual creative practices.

Back to my roots - playing electric bass - and exploring baritone guitar, somewhere between floating ambient guitar-scapes soaked in reverb and uplifting dub. Both of which I associate with skies/flying/up.

A shoegaze dub? Ambient dub post-rock? anyway, it’s 4:30am, i need to catch some sleep.

Step 1: Consider various music techniques you might employ to suggest (or imitate, or insinuate) that something is floating in air.

Step 2: Select one of the techniques you considered in Step 1 and experiment with it a bit.

Step 3: Record a piece of music built around the technique you focused on in Step 2.

Floating - Shoegaze Dub [disquiet0603] [Draft]

A guitar-only ambient offering for the Disquiet Junto Project 0611: Music That Listens to Itself

The Assignment: Record a piece of music that repurposes itself as it proceeds.

This has my present-day performance being overdubbed on to a recording I made decades ago. Which lends a new meaning to this week's call for music that "listens to itself" .

In order to select a launching pad to work off of, I had a search around my personal sound library and found a sample I recorded on my tape deck back in 1992. This starts off the track, fed through various delay instances in Logic. 

Onto that, I overdubbed three guitar tracks using different settings/modes on the Pladask Elektrisk Fabrikat, a granular sampler/delay that plays and re-plays what you feed into it, changing the sounds constantly through its internal algorithms as it goes along - and I also opted to make it sound even more organic by keeping fiddling with the knobs as the sounds played back. 
I went for particularly calm, slow movements, in order to achieve that "meditative" and "particularly quiet" quality Marc (@disquiet) called for.

I am particularly fond of the tension between the material from then vs the recordings made now. What you're hearing on top of that basic track is a kind of bass line and two more mid-range/trebly Fabrikat tracks. Et voilá!
