Disquiet Junto Project 0551: The Bends
The Assignment: Get less strict about something you’re strict about.

Step 1: Think about things you’re strict about when you make music. Maybe you only work in a minor key, or you never use drum machines, or you always stick in 4/4, or you never revisit past work, or something else entirely.

Step 2: Choose one thing from the list you made in Step 1 and think of it as a rule.

Step 3: Think about how you could be less strict in regard to the rule you focused on in Step 2.

Step 4: Record a piece of music in which you bend the rule, as you determined in Step 3.

A few minutes from my practice session with a simple improvisation setup: a portable electric piano through overdrive & compressor through tape delay.

I simply in love with how the stereo phaser & tremolo of the electric piano sound get transformed into that overdriven electric guitar soundscape that is constantly undulating and moving.

Disquiet Junto Project 0597: Goal Line
The Assignment: Get started on a plan by getting over getting started.

Step 1: For a lot of people right now, it’s around the start of summer. For many of them, it can mean the start of one plan or another. You may very well have musical goals for the next few months. Think of one to focus on.

Step 2: Don’t wait. Record one piece of music that kick-starts whatever goal you’re working toward. Often the first step is the most difficult. Take that step.

This week’s project takes the start of summer as its theme. And if it’s the start of winter where you are, instead, I hope that it can still apply.

Disquiet Junto Project 0612: Drum Vector
The Assignment: Walk the listener through variations on the same percussive instrument.

Dragged my wooden tongue drum out of the closet for this one. Recorded too many variations and had to cut a few. Basically just used different reverbs and delays to give each variation it's own space.  Also played with panning on the cross fades to make it seem like you're walking from one area to the next.  Then for a noise bed I routed everything to a new track with more reverb, resonator, effects and so on.  Automated the stereo width on that one rather randomly.
